If you post a thread in the lounge and no one responds...
did you really post it? (Think: tree falling in the forest with and noone sees/hears it...)

as in also have the speaking to noone experience - or perhaps instead a nice affirmation (as in - won't let the ironic happen per the thread topic?) either way - a good evening to you. :hi:

19. don't worry
I haven't been around in the lounge recently enough to catch the inside jokes either. Here newbies, and oldbies who are infrequent visitors are on the same footing. Its all good - especially realizing that the 'silent tree falling' phenom hits many (nothing personal) - and that small first conversations (even on something as silly as I started here) can become the beginning of 'familiarity' for future conversations. :D

Good evening to you, as well.

10. What a great phrase...
just last week a friend had her urban students read Pygmalian - and because Eliza's accent was so hard for the students to understand when reading - the movie My Fair Lady was shown ... they loved it (which sorta suprised the teacher as the kids tend to be TOO cool for old movies, not too mention a musical.)

Though, in this case... it has to be amended to "By Jove she's got it" ;-)

36. Salin, we brought the VHS of "My Fair Lady" to Hawaii when our grandkids were there.
They were seven and four years old.

They watched the whole movie and loved every minute of it.

We also have DVDs of "Carousel" and a couple of other movies that are classics.

A couple of weeks ago, "Annie" the musical was here and I took my granddaughter, now age 9. She really loved it.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate them very much.

Talk again soon.

7. There is a song in the musical 1776 that I sometimes "hear"
John Adams walks into the room where the continental congress was meeting before folks were there...and starts with the frame: "Is anybody there, Does anybody hear... does anybody hear, what I hear..."

Sometimes that is the experience here.

I am now an "oldtimer" (though i still remember being a newbie and a voice ignored by the oldtimers) - but don't get much time in the lounge. Over the years voices /faces change. When I talk today it is as like a newby. Few in the lounge (if any) are familiar with me. That's cool - group dynamics always change/shift. But it is sorta nice to begin to 'know' new folks and visa versa. :hi:

13. So Cool that someone knows that reference!!!!
as a kid this was my favorite movie. In early adulthood I recommended the movie of the musical to others - til I saw it again. I still love it - but it is a bit cheesy in the production. But the music... great stuff.

So which stirs you more... the "Mamma dear mamma..." song (from the dead soldier) or "Mollassis to Cotton to Gin" (southern representative trying to justify slavery and point out the hypocracy at the time per those who wanted the benefits but were against slavery)?

Gonna have to try to find a copy to rent - haven't seen it in more than a decade (says something when the songs stay with you that long, eh?)

26. Funny, haven't thought about the movie in years
but the music stays with me. But an "anti war" theme - I missed (I was too young to fully appreciate the response to the Vietman War and its impact on popculture at the time - but given the time it came out - it makes sense that an anti-war tone would be conveyed). I don't doubt it. Per your message - I now *know* I have to find a copy to rent or buy, if I have to, to see/hear it again. I would bet that I would see/hear a whole lot more than I did as a kid. Thanks.

Haven't crossed paths with you lately - hope all is well with you!

38. both are powerful songs
The one so sad and the other so angry. It's really a great musical, when you think about songs like these.

I saw the movie with my English class when it first came out--I was in 7th grade. I don't think I saw it again until a few years ago, when I rented it for my kids to watch. And yet, as you say, it stayed with me all those years. I also had the soundtrack album, which I listened to a lot (also had a crush on Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson!).

Thanks for reminding me how much I love this show! :yourock:

41. hahaha - now that you say it... think I had a crush on TJ (Ken Howard)
as well. I also remember recognizing "John Adams" when the actor had a role on St. Elsewhere.

That is one of the fun and suprising things in the lounge - suddenly a conversation will trigger some other realization/thing to follow up on. Except for the line I state earlier "is anybody here..." reference, I really hadn't thought about the show. Time to find it. Almost getting to the point (through this thread) where it is "imperative" that I get and see the movie again. What a pleasant result from a sorta rhetorical thread that I expected to drop like a stone.

Didn't Ken Howard marry Ann Lander's daughter Margo? Ann's real name was Eppie Lederer.

If it's the couple I was thinking of, they divorced. Just trivia from another generation... not sure...

17. Hi Salin. Yes, we saw the stage play of 1776 in Boston, where I was a radio talk show host.
I still do reviewing on a volunteer basis here in Oregon.

1776 had a great score -- and I really liked the musical. I'm almost 68 years old and remember many of the older musicals. I wish they would bring that one back. I'll have to try and find the lyrics now.

Nice to speak with you on the DU.

Here's our photo in Piccadilly Circus last summer. It was my birthday and we had just seen

30. Radio Lady,
up thread I respond to one of your posts - in my work place I feel "old" - but am not really so old - but sometimes get the nudge that because at the time of 'experiencing' something I didn't get the full impact/message because of my age (and at that time lack of background knowledge.) You have pushed me from nostalgia per really enjoying the movie and songtrack (my parents bought the record - so I heard it enough time to remember my favorite songs... all these decades later.)

Elsewhere you mentioned an anti-war theme. I missed it - was too young and missed too much of the Vietnam War (my memory of it is some LIFE magazine, horrifying pictures, and my Dad yelling at the TV). Now that you say it - given my memory of some songs - and knowledge of the time/era when it was written - I am dying to get my hands on a copy of the movie and watch it again. With new eyes and ears. I LOVE it when that happens (opening one's eyes to be able to experience an "old experience" with a new perspective.) Thanks for that. :hi:

8. I had one like that last week.
The thing is, it was a petition to ban the sale of fur
from dogs and cats.

No one except one or two people in the entire animal loving
Lounge paid any attention to it.
I even linked it to a Dog and Cat picture thread!

In the often maligned GD, I got a number of responses
and recommendations.

Go figure!

12. over the years (gawsh that makes me feel old to say that)
I have waivered between which forum I spend more time and find more responses/more warmth. At times it is the lounge. Other times it is GD. I know some like to "war" between the two forums... but I have found that depending on the time and topic that each forum can be a jewel (or the opposite). On a topical issue - I am not suprised that you found more response on GD. The challenge there can be that things move so fast (new threads) that unless you are there to respond to posts on your thread it can die very quickly by falling off the front page of the forum.

50. Hi Radio Lady.

Here's the link to the petition from the Humane Society.

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_fur_labeling

They were taking the pelts from live animals, dogs and cats to
sell in the US. Those furs are illegal in the US but as you can see
many of them made it into major department stores.

31. Rain Dog?
I used to periodically run into her in B-ton at places like the grocery store. Now that most of my time is spent in Indy - I think it has been more than a year since I have seen her. :-( Thanks for the reminder I need to look her up. Hope that she is okay.

It would be great to get together again. Periodically Indy folks get together - and it is always good (but small). It helped to have a central 'reason' to gather - that lasted more than a day - so that folks got some real time to interact (which in at least one case I can think of was significantly life changing ;-) )

In the Indiana Forum - I read that Gore is ooming to Indy in late April (around my birthday, for what its worth...) But it is midweek. Meaning that if folks were going to work to make it "an event" (ala take a couple of days off of work) we would probably have to start talking it up now. Or find something else to start organizing around.

Last night I posted about going to see the Goo Goo Dolls in Detroit - around 2AM. All of the sudden, tonight, I am getting replies to it, which is cool, don't get me wrong.

That said, I would say that you need to wait at least 24 hours to really find out if anyone is aware of the particular tree you are broadcasting from. ;-)
