So we're in NYC tonight. Just got back from hearing Nanci Griffith at the Blue Note. She was less than 5 feet away from me. Sitting in a reserved seat beside me was none other than Julie Gold, who wrote the song From A Distance. Nanci recorded it first, and then Bette Midler covered it with huge success.
I was so shocked and moved by the whole evening, I cried all through Nanci's set. I was completely freaked out to have Julie Gold sitting practically in my lap--they really pack 'em in there at the Blue Note. My God!! What an amazing evening.
Of course, Nanci sang From A Distance, and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. She also sang Tom Waits'Ruby's Arms. Her last song, Across the Great Divide, she dedicated to Ann Richards, Nellie Conolly and our beloved Molly Ivins. I'm still shaking from the gravity of it all....Nanci is the reason I started playing guitar as a teenager in the '80s. She was perfection. It was just utter magic.
I love NYC!
