Question for DU Detroit
I'm writing a story and I need some information about Detroit.

1. What is a name a well known hospital. This would be like a "celebrity" hospital. Like Cedars-Sinai is in Los Angeles. In other words, if Aretha Franklin had to go the hospital where would she go?

2. What is the name of a upper middle class residential area of Detroit. This would be an area with fairly large homes and/or condos. I'm talking about some place were maybe a doctor or a hospital administrator might live.

Thanky!

1. Hmm
I'm not totally sure about the hospital but I'd say Beaumont. Not sure if that is where celebrities would go, but it's the closest one I can think of nearby the most affluent suburbs.

For the residential area I'd say Bloomfield Hills.

3. I believe Aretha lives in one of the Bloomfields
She had a big house around there that burned down a few years ago.

4. An upscale hospital is Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms.
And an administrator would most likely live in Grosse Pointe Shores near Lake St. Claire. Of course, all the locations mentioned are outside of the city proper.

5. Henry Ford Medical Center is where a lot of celebrities would go
and also where all sports figures go.

Detroit Medical Centers (Harper, Hutzel, Children's, and Detroit Receiving Hospitals are included in this) is the closest thing we have to a Cedars type hospital here.

Grosse Pointe Farms is an upper middle classe (doctors, lawyer, execs and high end business) residential neighborhood. There are the Farms, the Shores, the Woods, the Park and the City. But the highest concentration of doctors and upper middle class would be there.

The reason I said this is it sounded like you were almost looking for kind of "establishment" in Wayne County, which is the county Detroit is located in. I'm going with east side hospitals and neighborhoods. Beaumont and Blommfield/Birmingham are located in Oakland County, abutting Wayne County to the North.

8. Aretha has a house in Bloomfield and an apartment on the river downtown
From what I understand, her family stays in the Bloomfield house and if she were there she'd probably go to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak (not Troy). Aretha herself primarily stays in the hi-rise apartment in downtown Detroit (the Riverfront Apartments) near Joe Louis Arena. From there, I'd think she'd go to Henry Ford Hospital in the New Center Area or the Detroit Medical Center (the DMC) near the Wayne State University campus.

As far as upper middle class residential areas, do you mean in the city or in the metro area? Oakland County is just north of Detroit and is regularly ranked among the highest per capita income counties in the country. The infamous 8 Mile Road is the dividing line between the city and Oakland County (and Macomb County on the eastside).

9. Born and rasied in Motown
In Detroit Mount Carmel was a great hospital.
For suburbs, you have to go with Bloomfield Hills, imho............

It's part of the Detroit Medical Center.

10. Answers
Henry Ford Hospital is top-notch: http://www.henryfordhealth.org /

So is the Detroit Medical Center (actually a cluster of hospitals under one umbrella organization: http://www.dmc.org /

As far as good areas: the Indian Village and Palmer Woods neighborhoods have big, beautiful old homes. And there are some nice high-rise condos on the east riverfront.

11. Neighborhoods
Indian Village, Palmer Park or Woods, and Boston Edison are the chi chi, pricey old neighborhoods in the city proper. The Pointes as they are known: Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, and Grosse Pointe Woods are the 'old money' suburbs. Newer money is in Oakland County; Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, especially that's where most of the celebrities and sports stars live.

I'm not as up on the hospitals. I live in Ann Arbor which has the top hospital in the state; the University of Michigan Medical Center.
