Mini Rant - Please for the love of all that is sacred
Do not park in the handicapped spots if you do not have a permit to do so.

Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 02:07 PM by Rabrrrrrr
after a Jagermeister and Apple Schnapps bender with the Home Ec class at the Catholic girl's junior high school? You didn't seem to care that you didn't have a handicapped placard wedged in your naked ass cheeks, then.

that stupidity is a valid handicap, thus in one fell swoop making the entirety of Hoboken de facto handicapped parking.

I love to leave my shopping carts in their spaces, too.

If they're lazy enough to be handicapped, they can maybe burn some calories putting my cart away for me.

10. I mistakenly parked in a handicapped spot about a month ago.
Got a ticket, felt like the worst person in the world! It was in a small town whose main street I have parked on a gazillion times. They added a handicapped spot and in the freezing cold and blowing snow I did not see the sign. And the painted one on the road was covered in snow. I paid the fine and felt like a jerk. I didn't mean it really! I will never, ever do it again. :-)

30. I know they say ignorance of the law is no excuse
but I understand, especially since the spot is relatively new, how one could make that mistake.

I, for one, would never hold that against you.

33. I did that too, a while ago.
see post #29. I didn't get a ticket, thankfully, but I felt pretty terrible when I realized what I had done. In my case, there was no pole identifying it and the only marking was on the ground, which I didn't notice since I had backed into the spot. Ooops. Oh well. Live and learn. We move on. Sorry you got a ticket, though. That sucks.

19. My dad got a lot of that
People seem to forget that just because someone's disability isn't obvious that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm not disagreeing with the OP that people w/o a permit shouldn't use handicap spots but people also shouldn't make snide remarks judging the health of those who do. I've heard people say mean things.

21. I have a friend who is an amputee - motorcycle accident took his lower leg
He is also extremely handsome. When he had his first prosthesis (basically the metal braces with the foot attached) he put his permit up in a shopping center's parking lot. This woman walked up to him and basically screamed at him about, "How dare you use your grandparent's permit, when it is CLEAR that you are more than able bodied!"

He simply pulled up his pant leg and said, "Lady, look down at my foot!"

She was SO humiliated that she did not even go into the store.

17. I call the cops on that, and on lazy assholes who park in the firelane.
And I also call the cops when I see a car in the middle of the parking lot in July with a baby or toddler in it (I see this several times a year here in bumfuck Mississippi).

Cops here respond to those calls and write tickets--for the firelane and handicap parking violations. One time I called about the kid thing, and the parents, BOTH OF WHOM were in the store, were taken into custody and the children turned over to a relative. There were several angry mothers (me included) who stood by to watch that one--we had watched the children while the parents were in the store to make sure that they were taken care of until the cops arrived.

I have no tolerance for people who break the law to shop. Fuck em.

Twice in the same week, the same car did it. The school receptionist called the police for me today. I left a note on the car on Monday, when it happened.

I wish they would give those of us with permits, a ticket book.

27. Or just deputize concerned citizens to write tickets.
A camera and a ticketbook. All you'd need. Photo the car in the spot, and then leave the ticket. No way to fight that in court.

At the universities here, if you park in a handicap space without a permit, your car gets towed. You don't get three chances. Your car gets towed on the first violation, and the fine is, if I remember correctly, a couple hundred dollars (plus the tow fee).

If cities would abide by those standards, the only people parking in those spaces would be people who have the placards or plates to do so.

23. Hear, hear! I used to work in an office complex where people
who were NOT handicapped used those spaces all the time. The cops wouldn't do anything, because by law (here in Seattle, anyway), the complex grounds were private property, and it was up to the owners to call a tow truck. I got these BIG bright orange stickers, and would slap them on the window, then watch as the car's owners would throw fits when they saw them! BWAHAHAHAHA! I can tell you, the people whose cars I tagged never parked in the handicapped spaces again!

29. I agree.
one time I accidentally parked in a handicapped spot. I had backed into it and walked into the store, without noticing at all. I didn't even notice until I came out and saw that somebody had left a chastising note on my windshield, saying "Shame on you!" :(

I was basically wracked with guilt for the rest of the day b/c it had been an honest mistake. Oops.

Maybe that happened in your case, as well. Bottom line, nobody's perfect...but at the same time, I understand your upset.

31. I used to do that before I got my permit for my dad, but I would
put a sign on the dashboard indicating that the permit had been ordered and tell the restauranteur in case someone complained. And, I only did that if I was alone.

There was NO way I could get a 250 pound 80yo man into a wheelchair from the car without using a handicapped spot.

It took forever to get mailed to me, I want to say it was six weeks.

36. I still have my Minnesota placard
In Minnesota, you have to have your doctor sign the form, then take it in person to the DMV to order your permit. When you order the permit, they issue you a temporary placard to place on your dashboard.

I would not have been so irritated today if lady number one didn't walk out and grin at my friend like she couldn't figure out what she was waiting for. That being said, if you were in danger of wetting yourself, what can you do? I should have clarified that I think it's wrong to choose the handicapped stall when there are other available options. I see people do that frequently and it's rude.

50. My reading on that is that those stalls are handicap accessible,
not handicap reserved. I wouldn't use one if other stalls were empty, but if it was the only one open. The over sized stalls are very useful for mothers with young children. Ever try to close the door in a regular stall on yourself, a toddler and a a baby in a baby carrier?

I use the big stalls because I'm big. I also used the big stalls when I was a Young Mom and had a stroller and/or toddler(s) with me. I've never been rousted out of a stall by a genuinely handicapped person, but I would be compliant if that were to happen.
