Take these identical items and remove "Marquette University" and (in the case of the polo shirt) the Nike swoosh and they'd be half the price, if that.

Cripes. Why does college logo gear cost so damn much?

I spent $18.50 on a T-shirt because I NEED something with the logo on it for my trip next week. Criminy.

1. And yet kids that go to those institutions have to pay 8 millions dollars a year...
Same goes for schools with big name sports programs. If these sports bring so much money in, why do the students have to pay an arm and a leg to go there?

I don't get it.

2. Tuition at Marquette Law is $27,500 this year. And basketball is huge and profitable here.
Yeah.

I'm not sure the school sees a ton of money from the sale of these shirts and other gear -- some, yes, but I wonder how much the intermediaries make.

This isn't limited to big schools, either -- licensed gear at my undergrad institution (small, private, Division III) is insane too.

3. at The Ohio State University
(yes the "The" is important :D) The athletic department is entirely seperate from the university. They receive no funding from tuition, and in turn the college receives no sports revenues, or a very small percentage. The athletic department still makes massive contributions every once in a while (5 Million this year for the new library)

5. because they can
You paid the price.
The stuff moves off the tables, the cash registers sing.
Lets just hope the colors don't run and the shirt does not shrink.
I trust this isn't the first thing at marquette that was over priced and it will not be the last.
And marquette is no different from any other school.
Perhaps i am just bitter that after I left my university, I got larger and the wonderful school shirts became too small...
