QUICK! Someone PLEASE Say Something Intelligent!
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 01:29 PM by matcom
went to lunch by myself today at a local restaurant (just needed to get out of the office)

4 PROFESSIONAL 30 somethings sit at the table behind me.

The following topics were discussed:

American Idol: Paula is a nice judge while Simon is just mean. Ad nauseum discussion of who has talent and who doesn't (don't know the names). Did you SEE what she was wearing on stage the other night?

Britney: They feel VERY sorry for her (save for one of the women who thinks K-Fed should get custody). Her mother must have really been hard on her to succeed.

Tom Brady: How in the HELL could he be so irresponsible to father a child with his ex-girlfriend? He is SUCH a ROLE MODEL and this simply isn't good for his career!

Segway....

Emmit Smith: He IS a great role model because of his appearance on 'Dancing With The Stars'.

Paris Hilton: Both the ladies would like to have her figure. The men, not so much (too skinny).

Then I was done with lunch and I left.

:banghead:

1. Cartesian dualism is the philosophical manifestation of alienation.
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 01:26 PM by izzybeans
Mind is alienated from body, body from society, and the self from the world. 'Tis the root of all evil and, when taken to its logical conclusion, ends up in conversations just like those that you overheard.

Does that help?

3. An indifference curve represents all combinations
of market baskets that provide a consumer with the same level of satisfaction.

Also, The marginal rate of substitution is the maximum amount of a good that a consumer is willing to give up in order to obtain one additional unit of another good.

I hope that helps :P

12. Would you like a history lesson?
The first pyramid in Egypt was the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, which was an outgrowth of the mastaba (bench-like) tombs used by previous kings. It is located at Saqqara and was designed by the architect Imhotep in the early 27th century BC (probably 2660 or so). Imhotep was later deified for his work on the Step Pyramid and other projectss.

This is the Step Pyramid:

It's 214 feet tall, and Imhotep made alterations six times after construction was completed. The Step Pyramid was not intended to be the original tomb project, but that one was scrapped for some reason. The Step Pyramid was what Imhotep designed as a replacement.

To quote Shakespeare:

Her wit
Values itself so highly that to her
All matter else seems weak. She
cannot love,
Nor take no shape nor project of
affection,
She is so self-endeared.

"The theory of cognitive dissonance states that contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions."

35. It is said that no man is an island,
but in truth, every man is an island. And if each island reacts differently to the same stimuli, but uses the same word-encoded information to describe the different reaction, we may live our entire lives not guessing that our islands are nothing alike at all.
