My mom had surgery today on her foot and lower leg
She injured it doing some home improvements. She was scheduled for the surgery, but the damage was much worse than what showed on the x-ray. Apparently she crushed several of her metatarsals, so right now she has more hardware in her foot than a Home Depot store.

She also has to sit with her foot elevated above her heart for 23 hours a day for the next two weeks.

It kills me not to be able to be there to help her.

3. My dad and my son are both there.
So she will be okay. I just wish I could help too.

She is on Oxycontin right now, so even though she is in pain, she doesn't give a rip.

I told her that if she started to spout right wing rhetoric (ala Rush Limbaugh) that I was going to get worried (she is almost as liberal as I am).

4. She really did a number on her foot
I know it is going to be awhile.

At least I will be out there in a month to help her.

She has done some things to help herself out - she hired a temporary housekeeper, she has rented a wheelchair, bought a walker (for when she can get up and around), bought a commode and a shower chair.

I gave my dad and my son some strong directives about how she is not to DO anything (because she will try to - is very stubborn, and not the best patient in the world).

She is only allowed to get herself to the bathroom and back for the next two weeks.

My dad brought her some crossword puzzle books and some books and magazines.

5. I remember that you're going........
And that will be so good for all of you......

I think your directives to your dad and son will help a lot........

And also her preparations are very good ones.......

Hopefully the seriousness of her situation has caused her to realize that she must comply this time in order to heal well, and not have it drag on......

Hang in there, sweetie.........

6. I am just worried because I am so far away.
My big concern is DVT because of her Diabetes. I am sure her doctor is taking the necessary precations regarding that though.

8. Healing thoughts for your mom. Kitchey
I understand how you feel. I don't live near my mom, and she is dealing with a couple of illness that knock her off her pins when they flare up. Bugs me that I am not living closer to her when she's going through a bad time.

9. I know!
Her sisters are within a 4-5 hour drive of her, if anything should be needed, which helps my peace of mind a little.

Thanks for the hug!

12. I will do that
I have a bunch of pictures that I need to upload to my computer. I will burn a CD of them for her (she has a laptop at her disposal - so she can view and print them out.)

14. I am still trying to wrap my mind around how she did that much damage.
My dad was telling me today that the damage was very extensive.
