Poll question: Supermarket? Grocery store? Vote here:
I wonder if this is a regional thing?
An age thing?
Or a combination?

What do you call the place where you buy food to prepare at home?

4. I have no idea what that means.
29?
Ah...age?
And you're in Oregon and you say 'grocery store'?
OK, got it.
Thanks.

2. I think that a lot of it is age related.
My mother called them grocery stores, therefore I grew up calling them grocery stores.I call them by both names, but I think of them as grocery stores. Young'ns today are more likely to call them supermarkets in my observation.

3. Just to confuse you even more....
in Chicago, I know people who call it the market. To me, a market is an outdoor thing, like the local farmers' market or a street-based market such as those you find in Europe (and of which I am a devotee).

The place where I buy my food to prepare at home is the grocery store.

7. My uncle called it 'the grocery'.
Born and raised in Alabama, lived in KY from his late 20s on.
And he called the liquor store 'the dispensary'.

11. The dispensary????

I remember an old term used for pharmacists called dispensing pharmacist. Well, liquor is good for what ails you.

;)

I also call the grocery store Dominick's, as in, "I am going to Dominick's."

12. Uncle Tom was an interesting character.
Yeah, I had an 'Uncle Tom'.
In his dotage he would send me notes 'From Uncle Tom's Cabin'.
He was a laff riot, or thought he was, anyway.

His mother (my grandmother) was a tea-totaler. That may have been the reason for his 'delicate' term for the liquor store.
He, BTW, was not.
As they say, 'he liked his jar'.

24. I wish we had a Costco.
That's one of the high points of our trips to Boston.
Grazing at Costco.
We have TWO, count 'em, TWO grocery stores in our little town.
THE Winn-Dixie and Walmart.
Guess where I shop?

10. It's the grocery store.
Never the supermarket. Ever. Sometimes Stop & Shop. But usually The Grocery Store.

(For research purposes: I live in Connecticut, grew up in Mass., and am in my 40s.)

13. Interesting, no votes for 'supermarket'.
That's how somebody referred to it in another Lounge thread, hence the poll.

17. Grocery store...however...
most people here will identify the actual store they shop...so SaveOn/Superstore/Safeway replaces the generic term.

(ha! and the other large store is Sobey's...what's with all the S's?)

19. Reading Terminal Market
Or local farmers markets.

Reading Terminal Market named for the Reading Railroad which used to have it's terminal in Philadelphia. The Market is underneath what was the headhouse of the railway. The headhouse now is the Philadelphia Convention Center.

21. "the good bread store"
It's a very small Iraqi-owned market with fruits and veggies and some dairy and an olive bar, you can't even fit two carts past each other in the aisles, but they bake the best bread ever in the middle of the store, in something that's kind of like a pizza oven. They are sort of a cross between pitas (they have a pocket) and bagels (way chewier and more filling than pitas). 6 for a dollar, and to die for.
