NY City DUers---help?
My in-laws want to go visit NYC this summer. They are almost "elderly," and will NOT be able to use the subways---

MIL wants to see the Met. Museum, statue of liberty...usual tourist stuff. They also want to go to the Roosevelt home in Hyde Park--

Where should/can we stay without spending a fortune? Where can we park, etc.? Any tips will be appreciated!

Thanks!

We are looking it up right now--

Stupid question...from there to get to the tourist spots, should we just try for cabs?

3. yes. parking near tourists spots is virtually impossible.
are you driving there? because if you dont bring a car...you maybe able to find a hotel midtown and save on cabfares.

That would definitely be a vacation to remember! The Griswolds would have nothing on us :silly:

We could stop in and see JJ in the Philly area too!

Please give Stephanie a hug from me and scratch Scout behind the ear too. :grouphug:

9. Don't miss the Neue Museum
Just up the street from the Met.
5th Avenue and 86th Street - http://www.neuegalerie.org/

Great collection of Austrian and German art and a really great cafe on the first floor.

Also, any of Danny Meyer's restaurants - Union Square Cafe or Blue Smoke..

If you're coming to Philly, eat at Standard Tap, 2nd and Poplar - about a mile from the Liberty Bell.
In Old City try Mandoline - a BYOB on Chestnut Street bet. 2nd and 3rd (dinner and cash only), Tony Lukes at Front and Oregon in South Philly for the ubiquitous cheese steak or Italian roast pork sandwich with Provolone and broccoli rabe. And ignore the Hard Rock Cafe at 12th and Market and go into the Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch instead. There are some fabulous small merchants there who do great stuff for lunch. Buy your sandwich or whatever and go into the Beer Garden in the center of the market, and have a beer.

VietNam Palace on 11th Street between Race and Vine has amazingly inexpensive and tasty food.

If you want really cheap go to the Hand Drawn Noodle House on Race Street between 9th and 10th. Cash only and you'll likely be the only Anglos in the place. Order the Fried Soy Sauce Noodles and watch the chef make the noodles in the kitchen.

Try the Rodin Museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the biggest collection of Rodin outside of Paris. If you want something bizarre go to the Mutter Museum of medical oddities. And if you've got the time go just outside of the city and visit the Barnes Museum on Latches Lane in Merion, PA - 5 minutes outside the city limits http://www.barnesfoundation.org/r_main.html
You want more restarants or sights in Philly, let me know.

10. If you end up at international house
Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 10:53 PM by sir_captain
you should be able to find free parking on the street it's on--Claremont Avenue. First off, though international house has entrances on two different streets, you should park on Claremont. That said, I'd suggest parking down as close as possible to the 116th st. end of the avenue (check out google maps.) That's right by the main entrance to Columbia University, and consequently, there's a lot more security and your car will be fine. Also keep in mind that NYC has rules regarding which side of the street you can park on on which days according to the street cleaning schedule. So look that up before you arrive. There will be notices on the parking signs as well.

If the subway is out, taxis are your best bet. As it happens, the Columbia area is a super easy place to catch a cab 24 hours a day. You shouldn't have too much problem getting one in most of the city as well.

Edit: Hyde Park is kind of a dump other than its historical sites, so I'd highly suggest staying (if you're staying overnight) in the town a few miles north: Rhinebeck. It's a really charming little town with a nice hotel: The Beekman Arms.
