What would you do if your SO brought home a new pet without your input?

Depends on the situation. Usually they are abandoned dogs. Doubt if he would actually go and seek one out. We do need some new barn cats though.

10. That is a major decision. I would hope that he wouldn't, but

if it were a pup he ran over or something similar and he couldn't find the owner, then I would understand. But otherwise, we really would need to talk about adding another pet to our family. I wouldn't appreciate it so much. But I wouldn't be upset either. I love animals so much that I am always willing to make some room for another. Still, it is a major deal. A lot of things are involved with a pet.

I would remove the pet and all signs of it - from then on I would never mention it or agree that it had been present. About a week later I'd wrinkle up my nose and ask if she smelled anything, like a dead animal smell...

Either that, or I'd say "Cool - enjoy your new pet..."

disclaimer - One dog was in the middle of heavy traffic on a main road and I couldn't leave it. I found it's owners the next day. The second dog is mostly abandoned but has a home, and I've brought it home on my lunch break on 2 occasions and am thinking heavily about liberating it permanently as it deserves a life that doesn't primarily involve the streets. As for the 18 year old - well, she's still here. :o

with a shelter dog during adoption day at the pet store but then he came to his senses.

We already have a dog and the one he wants is big and sheds, which I think would really bother my allergies/asthma.

24. My husband did that.

He brought home our beloved Emily, now deceased. She was a Lab mix.

He did not tell me he was bringing a new dog home. We already had a dog. But He explained the conditions the dog had been living in. He told me that we only needed to keep her until we could find a good home.

She was such a sweetie, that the kids and I fell in love with her. We saw that she got along with our other dog and the cats. She stayed for the next thirteen years. I will see her at the rainbow bridge.

but there are circumstances I could see where one has to make a quick decision.

That being said, I'd probably just love it like all the other critters - I love pets and one more wouldn't make a huge difference. Unless it was a rhinoceros. I'm not set up to keep a rhinoceros.

Like, a lot. His sister was going to move into our building and the landlord told them they could pay a deposit for a pet and when we moved in he had told us it was strictly no pets. Ever since she told him that, he's been wanting a dog. What a great idea! Except for vet bills.. the walking... the cleaning. I already have to clean everything in our tiny apartment. So I said to him, how about a fish?

vets asap for a health check, shots and spay/neuter if needed. Would roll my eyes a bit at him and ask him did he really think we needed one more but most of the animals find us all by themselves and he has learned the lesson of ferret math,"they are so little one more wouldn't be that big of a difference" so I am not too concerned.
Funny but true story. He gave me this long lecture on how we had more than enough ferrets (8 at that time)and did not need anymore so we were not getting any more. Next day he goes to Pet Smart for litter etc and comes home with a 4 year old ferret. It just jumped out of some woman's arms into his and that woman just wasn't sure enough for him to allow it (Mojo) to go home with her after he snuggled on the DH.:rofl:

I'm extremely allergic to cats.

We'd been together for 28 years at that point, without a cat. Several dogs, but no cats.

We were divorced within 18 months, although the cat had little to do with that.

You do the math. :P There was little discussion of whether we should foster until adoption - it kinda happened.

Seriously, though, they were all cats that were left behind by people who were moving out of a newly-gentrified neighborhood, and those cats' litters. We got as many adopted as we could, and snagged 6 (my oldest was around before I met the s.o.). At one point, the s.o. was feeding like 12 cats outside, on top of the indoor cats. It got stupid for a while.

Only once did I rescue a cat without his imput. We had a permanent camp site and Memorial day weekend a cat showed up. I took it to the campground owner who said a litter had been dumped and he shouted "I'm going to shoot that damn cat!" The cat leaped out of my arms and I hollered out come find me at the end of the season and I'll bring you home. Well, guess what came walking down our driveway the last day of camping season? My kids and I promptly picked him up and put him in the packed car. My DH found out on the way home when he heard MERROOOOWWWWWW. DH didn't speak to me for 3 days and then promptly fell in love with Sir Thomas C. Cat.
