The setting, in case you don't recognize it, is Grand Central Station at rush hour. From The Fisher King:

Lucky David Lynch... real-life compounded the weirdness of this scene.

PS Barry Adamson playing in the background... I never noticed that before.

15. As someone who makes films for a living....
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 02:43 AM by CanuckAmok
the sheer SIZE of this location shoot always floors me. The sheer logistics of shooting like this in a city are staggering; look at some of the long-lens shots looking down the streets...there must have been 200 cops on-duty just to control traffic. Six cameras, tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and squibs. Not even considering the cost of A-list actors of the day (Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore...), the bill for this day's shooting must have been in the millions.

Even in this age where CGI and digital wizardry can do anything, the sheer scope of this scene hasn't been out-done.

Add Michael Mann's undeniable natural genius for shooting fight sequences (it's what he should do... he should never, ever deal in actor dialogue), and you get this masterpiece of action:

PS the sound mix/editing are just incredible. Listen to it with headphones if you can.

On a related note the car chase in Ronin. Almost 8 minutes of automotive mayhem.

Easy company liberates a concentration camp. Loots the nearby town for food.

Webster: "You're not a Nazi? My mistake, you fat fucking prick. How about a human being? You one of those? Are you gonna tell me you never smelled the fucking stench?"

David Webster dropped out of Harvard to join the parachute infantry. With his education and influential family, Webster could have been an officer stateside. But he wanted to be a "grunt", to see and document the war from a foxhole.

24. You want power?
Kenneth Branagh summons up something divine, even as he leads a war of conquest for vanity's sake in Henry V. Here's his St. Crispin's Day speech at Agincourt. Watch for a quick shot of a very, very young Christian Bale as Boy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z399i_PksfU

Earlier in the film, Branagh's King Harry confronts three traitors and lets them hang themselves, so to speak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxiVIanbqeg

it will remember how it made you feel:

After Sally Field stands on her desk to hold up this sign, workers in the factory start shutting off their machines one by one until it is dead quiet. Then the police come in and escort her out. Great scene!

33. My favourite fictional political speech
From "A Very British Coup"...

The premise: Leftist, steel worker, and labour leader Harry Perkins has been elected to Prime Minister of England on a platform of Democratic Socialism. His first official act is to release his associates from prisons across the UK, where they've been held as political prsoners.

His second act is to order a complete withdral of nuclear weapons from British soil, including the US military bases.

When Britain's books are shown to be in financial ruin, Perkins borrows money from the USSR to pay the debt, thereby severing the ties that bind the UK to the US military industral complex.

The CIA and the establishment attempt to unseat him using sex scandals, threats, and murdering of some of his cabinet.

Perkins is unphased.

The newspapers are an obvious critique of Rupert Murdoch's media monopoly. The Murdoch-character attempts to unseat Perkins by blaiming a nationwide ower workers strike on his governement.

Perkins does not bend.

Finally, in the scene posted here, Perkins is shown bank accont statements connecting him to shady financial dealings with a secret former mistress of his and bribery from the Soviets. They are forgeries, of course, but both Perkins and Sir Percy (the Lord who provides the documents) know that the public will be too easily convinced of the documents' frauldulent nature.

Perkins is told that he has two options; he can resign citing "ill health", or he can be linked to the bank forgeries.

In essence, Perkins' government is being overthrown.

He goes live on all media to read the resignation speech that has been prepared for him.......
