Scientists and Mars hobbyists are trying to independently analyze this data dump, along with Viking images from the 70s.
The above are but 2 examples of many. The pictures are fascinating but I am skeptical about the imaginative/speculative/scientific explanations offered sometimes, especially the anthropomorphizing (seeing giant faces or the like in Martian geological forms--and sometimes the most "credentialed" experts, like Hoagland or T.Flandern, are the most fanciful!) Take the material at these links however you wish, I'm not connected with them. I just think it's a fascinating subject. Kinda fun for open minds with a paranoid streak:
