So I'm the last person ALIVE to see TheSopranos & am underwhelmed.
Not that I've actually WATCHED it (have it on the t.v. while DUing). Plus, I've ALWAYS had a bias against mafia movies, detest Godfather I, II, III, ad infinitum. I don't like MASS MURDERERS being glorified, bottom line. When murderers are shown to have a SOFTER SIDE (family, they love their kids, they have religious rituals)----------I ---------DON'T CARE!!1

So this episode of The Sopranos has got some SUBLIME opera aria in the background while some mafia slut is whining about her marriage/love-life or WHATEVER the cheenee.

No. never again.

91. I'm another who hasn't seen it. And I can up the ante:
I've tried to watch "The Godfather" and couldn't sit through it. Not saying it's a bad movie; I'm perfectly open to the possibility that it's fantastic and I've got crappy taste. I just can't sit through mob movies.

Personally, I think it's a great show, as is Godfather I and II as films.

26. They're hardly glorified.
Many of the characters end up dead, or at the very least, battling serious mental demons.

Just because they make mobsters three-dimensional characters does not make them role models.

34. Really?
I'm offering my opinion of a show I have seen every episode of in a calm manner while you are typing in ALL CAPS and using lots of "!!!!1111" to offer your opinion of a show you've barely seen.

I understood what points you were trying to make, but how you respond to my thoughts is based on your perception entirely.

39. What part of "critical" and "judgmental" is not clear?
Your "thoughts" have been uniformly contentious. As for my typing in ALL CAPS, it's only the EMPHASIS, and the !!1 is an OLD, inside DU joke, so WHY does it all have to be SPELLED OUT??!!1

(Really, please don't answer--I really AM trying to TEAR MYSELF AWAY!!1 If discourse has to be 'spained to the nth degree, it just ain't worth it.)

43. If you make good points, caps are not needed.
At least not with every other word, you know.

And I am aware of the "!!!111" DU joke -- the only thing is that your posts on this thread seem to be dead serious, which do not mesh well with the freeper-like punctuation that you intended to convey a humorous effect.

Contentious? First, I stated that I enjoyed the show, then you responded how you didn't like the message of the show -- therefore, I stated that the message you are thinking of is not the point of the show.

Somehow, that makes me condescending, but, hey, whatever.

49. Why is your using the "freeper" word O.K.? It's a DU rule-breaker
and cheap. As for your asphyxiation over my use of CAPS for EMPHASIS, it's JUST MY STYLE. *I* don't like your tenor, so?!!1

51. I wasn't calling you a freeper.
I said the punctuation style you used was based on actual freepspeak, the same freepspeak that led to DUers using it mockingly.

However, like I said before, your deadly serious tone in this thread does not mesh well with said freepspeak, particularly when you are going for a humorous effect in that regard.

Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 11:11 PM by Madspirit
I'm not that crazy about most mobster shows either but I do like my villains three dimensional, even serial killers. I like to know and understand the psychological "why". I did love The Godfathers but you couldn't pay me to watch The Sopranos. ...but I saw nothing condescending about your post. I just thought you were explaining a different way of looking at things. I prefer my shows with shades of gray. I like all people in my shows to be three dimensional because all people are three dimensional. I thought you were just explaining that way of looking at these shows. I saw nothing wrong in what you posted. I hate black-and-white because nothing really is that way.
I love Joss Whedon's shows because of this. I love BSG, etc. I like Dark. It's real. ...and the best of these shows do not glorify the Evil. They show exactly the prices people pay.

The only reason I don't watch The Sopranos is because it's not my preferred genre/s SciFi/Fantasy/Horror.

My new favorite show is Dexter...mwahahahaha...I bet the OP would HATE that. The protagonist/hero is a serial killer...<g>

I'm also about to start with BSG. I caught a bit of the newest episode, which revealed the death of a certain character, though, so there goes that surprise, but it still looks like a cool show to start on soon.

I've been watching The Wire obsessively lately, though I like to try different genres.

Maybe I'm just jaded and cynical but a lot of people sadly seem to think that offering a differing opinion IS condescension. Not good for open and intelligent discussion.

44. Dig your hole deeper, dude.
Slut is a derogatory term for a "promiscuous" woman. Get that? Derogatory. And if a woman is married, she probably couldn't be smeared as a "slut" anyway.

Honestly, I don't care if you ironed for your mother. Big deal. You still use derogatory terms for women.

BTW, you are the one doing the flame responses here. You enjoy excessive capitalization, don't you? You do know that mean internet yelling, right?

Just checking.

Nor do I think any of the Godfathers, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, the Departed, etc. do. I think ALL of these movies and TV shows do present mobsters ands their families as three-dimensional characters/real people -- which they are. BUt, I also think they all show the life in THis Thing of Ours as dirty, criminal, and often desperate.

15. It's the only reason why we subscribe to HBO
Several years ago my SO and I were snowbound in a cabin, and oddly enough, the only thing that came in loud 'n clear was HBO. Interestingly enough, they were having an all "Sopranos" weekend. Well, we also didn't have much heat or food, but plenty of quilts and booze. We were hooked! We came home and immediately upped our account to include HBO (and also got hooked on "Sex and the City" and "Six Feet Under"). We're not really hooked on anything now, just waiting for the last season of "Sopranos". We may ratchet down our subscription back to basic TV after it ends.

Was definitely the bonus. Although married when it was on, I totally identified with it. My second date with my spouse was my 30th birthday...we dated for three years...lived together for three years...and married for ten years. I was 29 when we met, now
I'm 46. He was 43, now he's 60. OMG!

55. Most of my girlfriends are single
so there is a little identification there. And the "Sopranos"...oh the "Sopranos"! There will never be anything like it again on TV.

Brilliant, and even better than the Sopranos, IMO.

74. I would like to!
We're really looking for a reason to cut off HBO after the "Sopranos". It would save $10 per month. But I would like to see "Wired"...maybe if they showed it on another cable channel.

29. I've never seen the Sopranos.
Nor have I seen American Idol, Fear Factor, Survivor, Lost, The Amazing Race, Gray's Anatomy, Cooking on Ice With the Stars, or any number of other shows.

From your description, I'm not missing much!

36. I just don't like it.

I do like the show Dexter (about a serial killer that only kills other serial killers), so my objection isn't that the show shows that murderers can be complicated.

But I think the Sopranos is utterly boring and insipid.

89. More Than One
Jeff Lindsay is the author. The first two books are "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" and "Dearly Devoted Dexter" and a third is due this year.
Lindsay loves the show just btw. I always like it when an author loves the show based on his work.

71. I've never watched it, but I just heard some godawful song at the end of it...
Mr GoG was watching. I heard some ghastly wailing from the TV, and thought he was listening to a concert. I asked him who was singing, and if someone had put them out of their misery yet. He said he didn't know; but it was the end of the Sopranos.

90. The singer was Andrea Bocelli.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Bocelli

And the episode was about a trip to Italy. What would Italy be without it's famous operatic singers??

The "whining slut" was upset because her husband left her and went off to talk to the Feds with no warning. No one knew where he was and then he came back after thought to be dead for months. She was also dealing with the fact that the doctors found a lump under her arm, and her husband wasn't being loving and sympathetic. It was one woman talking to two other women in her "social circle" getting support. It's not unknown for these men to come up missing, and on top of her health issue where is she supposed to turn?

I'm not really sure how you can be underwhelmed by something you have admittedly never watched. You wouldn't know the story line or why anything was happening. There are people in the show who are not mass murderers or murderers at all. But you would actually have to watch the show to know that, though.

That's more offensive than any Mafia movie or TV show I've ever seen.

However, I'm half Sicilian and have relatives ion "waste management" in Philly, so I guess I'm offensive, too, eh Paesano?
