The message, the man, and the loss of that man and his message. The realization that the message will never be fulfilled. Or at least it seems that way right now.

10. Sarah McLachlan
"I Love You"

I have a smile
Stretched from ear to ear
To see you walking down the road

We meet at the lights
I stare for a while
The world around disappears

Just you and me
On this island of hope
A breath between us could be miles

Let me surround you
My sea to your shore
Let me be the calm you seek

Oh and every time I'm close to you
There's too much I can't say
And you just walk away

And I forgot
To tell you
I love you
And the night's
Too long
And cold here
Without you
I grieve in my condition
For I cannot find the strength to say I need you so

Oh and every time I'm close to you
There's too much I can't say
And you just walk away

And I forgot
To tell you
I love you
And the night's
Too long
And cold here
Without you

A very sad song, contrary to Madison Avenue's frequent use of the second part to advertise Windex and other such products. The song is about a kid dying in Vietnam.

27. Ooh, good one. Gets me too- along with a couple more from HAIR
Frank Mills gets me nowadays- largely 'cause of Bush's presidency and the Rethug desire to roll back Roe V. Wade

Easy to be Hard- Well- anyone who's ever been in activism- been stomped on, had your ideas stolen, passed off as their own, or fallen in love with a fellow activist... (I fit all of these)

And "where do I go"- just 'cause I love the words- and it's meaningful for me right now- while health, and the decision to go back to school leave me not really going anywhere...

- Frank Mills Lyrics

I met a boy called Frank Mills
On September twelfth right here
In front of the Waverly
But unfortunately
I lost his address

He was last seen with his friend,
A drummer, he resembles George Harrison of the Beatles
But he wears his hair
Tied in a small bow at the back

I love him but it embarrasses me
To walk down the street with him
He lives in Brooklyn somewhere
And wears this white crash helmet

He has gold chains on his leather jacket
And on the back is written the names
Mary
And Mom
And Hell's Angels

I would gratefully
Appreciate it if you see him tell him
I'm in the park with my girlfriend
And please

Tell him Angela and I
Don't want the two dollars back
Just him!

Easy to be Hard

Easy to Be Hard Lyrics

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who care about evil
And social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to give in
Easy to help out

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who say they care about social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

- Where Do I Go Lyrics

Where do I go
Follow the river
Where do I go
Follow the gulls

Where is the something
Where is the someone
That tells me why I live and die

Where do I go
Follow the children
Where do I go
Follow their smiles

Is there an answer
In their sweet faces
That tells me why I live and die

Follow the wind song
Follow the thunder
Follow the neon in young lovers' eyes

Down to the gutter
Up to the glitter
Into the city
Where the truth lies

Where do I go
Follow my heartbeat
Where do I go
Follow my hand

Where will they lead me
And will I ever
Discover why I live and die

Why do I live (beads, flowers)
Why do I die (freedom, happiness)
Tell my why (beads, flowers)
Tell me where (freedom, happiness)
Tell my why (beads, flowers)
Tell me why (freedom!)

The Fugue at the end of the third movement of Brahms' Requiem

The restatement of the main theme of Ode to Joy in the fourth Movement of Beethoven's Ninth where the choir is going full tilt and the strings are playing these magnificent triplets...

Hello In There - John Prine

Time Has Told Me - Nick Drake (on the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a DJ for WFUV in NYC put together appropriate music for the occasion....I was driving around and she played this song, and it wiped me out - 9/11/02 was a very weird day in greater New York)

The Obvious Child - Paul Simon

Walkin' Home - Iris DeMent

Nessun Dorma - Puccini

34. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon and Garfunkel
When you're weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I'm on your side. When times get rough
And friends just can't be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you're down and out,
When you're on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
I'll take your part.
When darkness comes
And pain is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine.
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.

And I'm laying out my winter clothes, wishing I was gone, goin home
Where the new york city winters aren't bleedin me, leadin me to go home

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains

97. When I graduated from high school in 1970 that
passage "In the clearing stands a boxer.." was used beside a picture of our class president, a serious, intellectual kid who challenged the school administration on issues he was passionate about like being able to have an anti-Vietnam War rally on campus.

He was killed in a traffic accident at age 23, and I always think of him and the tragedy of his life cut short when I hear that song.

37. Cat Stevens - Father & Son
This song got me through so much. It still speaks to me, 20 years after I heard it for the first time. It brings me back to the deaths of my childhood friend, my grandpa and my dad. It brings me back to the first girl I shared this song with. It brings me back to my room in college when I thought I was in bigger trouble than I thought, but not as bad as I now know it was. It brings me back to my wedding. It brings me back to the birth of my child. One day, ti will bring me back to today, thinking and typing this with my eyes welling up with tears.

59. "What a Wonderful World" - Louis Armstrong
"The Circle Game" - Joni Mitchell

"100 Years" - Five for Fighting

"It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go" - Nanci Griffith

I am a backseat driver from America
They drive to the left on Falls Road
The man at the wheel's name is Seamus
We pass a child on the corner he knows
And Seamus says, Now, what chance has that
kid got?
And I say from the back, I don't know.
He says, There's barbed wire at all of these exits . . .
And there ain't no place in Belfast for that kid
to go.

(chorus)
It's a hard life
It's a hard life
It's a very hard life
It's a hard life wherever you go
If we poison our children with hatred
then, the hard life is all that they'll know
And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for
these kids to go
(Chicago)
(This world)

A cafeteria line in Chicago
The fat man in front of me
Is calling black people trash to his children
he's the only trash here I see
And I'm thinking this man wears a white hood
in the night when his children should sleep
But, they slip to their window and they see him
And they think that white hood's all they need

(chorus)

I was a child in the sixties
dreams could be held through TV
With Disney, and Cronkite, and Martin Luther
Oh, I believed, I believed . . I BELIEVED
Now, I am the backseat driver from America
I am not at the wheel of control
I am guilty, I am war, . . . I am the root of all evil
Lord, and I can't drive on the left side of the road

(repeat chorus)

... what a lovely thing to say.

My dad passed two years ago - we hadn't spoken in 20 years. However, after his death, my two sisters and I were able to track down our half-sisters (children of his second marriage) through the information included in his obituary. We hadn't seen each other since we were kids. We now email each other regularly, share pics of our kids, etc.

So something good finally did come out of it.

93. "Make and Break Harbour" by Stan Rogers
It's about the end of the traditional artisanal fishery in Nova Scotia. All too true.

How still lies the bay, in the light western airs
Which blow from the crimson horizon
Once more we tack home, with a dry empty hold
Saving gas with the breezes so fair.
She's a kindly Cape Islander, old but still sound
But so lost in the long liner's shadow
Make and break and make do, but the fish are so few
That she won't be replaced should she founder

Now it's so hard to not think of before the big war
When the cod went so cheap but so plenty.
Foreign trawlers go by now, with long-seeing eyes
Taking all where we seldom take any.
And the young folk don't stay with the fisherman's ways
Long ago they all moved to the cities.
And the ones left behind, old, tired, and blind
Won't work for a pound, for a penny.

In Make and Break Harbour the boats are so few
Too many are pulled up and rotten.
Most houses stand empty, old nets hung to dry
Are blown away, lost, and forgotten.

Now I can see the big draggers have stirred up the bay
Leaving lobster traps smashed on the bottom.
Can they think it don't pay to respect the old ways
That Make and Break men have not forgotten?
For we still keep our time to the turn of the tide
In this boat that I built with my father
Still lifts to the sky; the one-lunger and I
Still talk like old friends on the water.

In Make and Break Harbour the boats are so few
Too many are pulled up and rotten.
Most houses stand empty, old nets hung to dry
Are blown away, lost, and forgotten.

 :applause:

As does "After You're Gone" by Iris DeMent. Sometimes "The Last Resort" by the Eagles will do the trick. "Moonshiner" by Uncle Tupelo sometimes strikes a nerve. I Never Cry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMGSW_thoBQ
If there is a tear on my face
It makes me shiver to the bones
It shakes me, Babe
It's just a heartache that got in my eye
And you know I never cry, I never cry
Sometimes I drink more than I need
Until the TV's dead and gone
I may be lonely
But I'm never alone
And the night may pass me by
But I'll never cry
Take away, take away my eyes
Sometimes I'd rather be blind
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, its never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry, I'll never cry
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, its never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry
I'll never cry

I'll Never Find Another You

-Artists: The Seekers from "The Seekers-Greatest Hits"-Capitol 4XL-9397
-peak Billboard position # 4 in 1965
-Words and Music by Tom Springfield

There's a new world somewhere
They call The Promised Land
And I'll be there some day
If you will hold my hand
I still need you there beside me
No matter what I do
For I know I'll never find another you

There is always someone
For each of us they say
And you'll be my someone
For ever and a day
I could search the whole world over
Until my life is through
But I know I'll never find another you

It's a long, long journey
So stay by my side
When I walk through the storm
You'll be my guide, be my guide

If they gave me a fortune
My treasure would be small
I could lose it all tomorrow
And never mind at all
But if I should lose your love, dear
I don't know what I'll do
For I know I'll never find another you

(instrumental interlude>

But if I should lose your love, dear
I don't know what I'll do
For I know I'll never find another you

Another you, another you

132. yes the Lacrymosa is quite powerful.
I sang the Mozart Requiem at summer music camp in high school and it is indeed powerful.

The Albinoni Adagio, though it gets played too much. Like in The Doors movie.

The Samuel Barber Adagio for Strings, though it gets played too much. It started life as a movement of a string quartet.

I have a fabulous choral album called AGNUS DEI music of Inner Harmony, which is classical orchestral stuff arranged for acapella choir. It's on the Erato label. The Barber Adagio was turned into an Agnus Dei which is the first cut on the album.

Also, the Nimrod variation of the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, done on this CD as a Lux Aeterna. When they get to the climax they sing "Requiem Aeternam" (eternal rest). This really gets me, because I had that cut played at my father's funeral in 2000 in a little Methodist church in East Texas. I was proud of sneaking in some Latin to a Methodist church!! I wanted to play the Allegri Miserere but it was too long. Oh well.

Second verse of this story: I saw the Tallis Scholars (famous British choral group) perform a few years later. There was a reception at the church afterwards and I met some of the people. They are quite heavenly sounding, as you may know. I was speaking to one of the ladies in the group, told her about the Nimrod variation as a Lux Aeterna played at my father's funeral. She was familiar with the CD.

And you know what she said? "You did right well with that, young lady."

That really comforted me--that a member of one of the world's greatest choral groups would say that to me in that understated British way.
It did my heart good.

And as far as pop music goes, "In My Life" is a tearjerker.

131. The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. "I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZrN7kSVvoY

The Living Years

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that Im a prisoner
To all my father held so dear
I know that Im a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
Im afraid thats all weve got

You say you just dont see it
He says its perfect sense
You just cant get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
Its the bitterness that lasts

So dont yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you dont give up, and dont give in
You may just be o.k.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye

I wasnt there that morning
When my father passed away
I didnt get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
Im sure I heard his echo
In my babys new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye

134. Ready or Not by After 7
We slow danced to this before he left and was killed in Gulf War I.
I still can't listen to it to this day - even when his friend sings it.
It was a love song for us and I still can't believe I'm without him.
It's juvenile but it was our song and I still miss him.

I'll give the sun
The Rain
The Moon
The Stars and The Mountains
I'll give you the world
And all that you wish for
And even more
Girl I love you more than you could know
And that's for sure
I'd climb the highest hill
Cross the widest sea
Nothin could discourage me
And I pray that you will be
Always there for me
Forever more
Ready or not**
I'll give you everything
and more
All that I've got--it's yours
I'll give you everything
All that you're looking for
I'll give you my heart
My soul
my time
My love is a fountain
I will be your earth
And all that you need for
and even more
Cause girl I love you more than words can show
My love is pure
I'll walk a thousand miles
Sail a thousand seas
Nothin will discourage me
And I pray that you will be
Always there for me
Forever more
Repeat Chorus** 3x

135. "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt.
And "Travelin' Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks. They both get me every time.
