1. Joan Jett songs do kick ass
well rather whatever noise producing mechanism that it is coming from usually gets a bat smashing, as it should.

4. Shaft or Superfly?
Because Superfly kicks a whole lot of ass, too. Plus, who kicks more ass, Isaac Hayes or Curtis Mayfield? I'd have to go with Curtis. :D

6. Shaft, but it might depend on the version
Right now I'm listening to the live version from Wattstax, the one with the Jesse Jackson intro. I honestly think that it's one of the most exciting live music moments ever, especially considering the context of Wattstax.

Mayfield probably kicks a little more ass than Isacc Hayes but I wouldn't fuck with either one of them :)

But anything not in English cannot kick ass, by definition. Why? It's my poll! :D

11. Hmm. That does kick ass.
All right, bilingual is okay, but solely in another language is RIGHT OUT.

14. Meh.
It's got nice wah-wah, but it doesn't do much for me. Plus it has a flute, which automatically disqualifies it from asskicking. :D

18. Painkiller--Judas Priest
Scarifying. Demolishing all in it's path--leaving all other music a heap of smoking debris in the ditch after this goes past.

And remember Rob is over fifty years old and can still pull off these vocals. :wow:

21. My guess is it just kicks TOO much ass
as opposed to some deficit of ass-kickery! ;)

I watched this video over a tfriend's place (better home theater than I have--by far, actually) and he's a big Rush and Police fan--stuff like that, he likes crunch to some extent and loves guitar; he was pretty impressed by the show. When this tune was next up I warned him that they were gonna be gettin' HEAVY METAL on this track, even by the standards of the concert! He was looking at me in a most suspicous manner, kind of a "how will I be able to tell--it's ALL been metal as hell so far?" kinda look. Well, as they say the proof is in the pudding

What a freakin' bulldozer!

For the record, Joan Jett does kick some SERIOUS ass. :)

23. Here'a an overlooked gem: Victim of Changes
Edited on Mon Mar-12-07 10:06 AM by eyepaddle
This was written in the early 1970s and don't think it's been equalled to this day. This is simply the class of heavy metal, moody, dramatic varied--every part contributes to the whole. I can't reccommend this song highly enough--but at something like 8 minutes you need to have a little time for it.

Particularly the way KK's (the blond guy) solo sets up the bridge, which sets up Rob's titanic guttural scream, which in turn set's up Glenn's (the dark haired guitarist) cathartic solo. To me it's always been pretty much a pure explosion of emotiuonal release.

My guess is a person needs to wired so that they want to wallow in their own darkness--and then forcefully kick it out the door and be left cleansed--to really like heavy metal. This would explain the style's fairly limited cultural appeal; but if you wonder why I personally might like it, hold that thought in mind and watch this tune.

If you can't invest the time, I'll understand! :hi:

anything by James Brown will forever, eternally, kick more ass than Joan Jett or anyone that influenced Joan Jett (unless of course James Brown influenced her - which I doubt)
