in your user info. So, because of the 'death', if someone tries to create a new account under a different name to post despite being banned, they're called a 'zombie', as if they're trying to rise from the dead.
An active user who sets up another account is considered a sock puppet.
The mods are pretty strict about both, and I think they do a pretty good job stopping it.

It isn't unusual to run across someone who will accuse you of being either a zombie or a sockpuppet, if you disagree with them about something and they're floundering for a response usually.

Getting tombstoned is when one has one's account and posting privileges revoked by the admins. So called because when one views a banned member's profile, a grave marker is shown in place of that member's information.

A zombie is a DUer who's come "back from the dead," so to speak, having re-registered with a new username, and trying to avoid being recognized as the banned member s/he once was, as bannings on DU are permanent.
