From the Matcom News Desk: Woman knits sweater out of cat fur
LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A Colorado woman has made a sweater from her cat's fur.

Suzanne Owen, of Lakewood, Colo., used 5 gallons of fur shed by her cat Smokey to make the unusual garment.

Owens said she had the fur spun into yarn, which she used to knit the sweater.

Except for some minor shedding, Owens said her new sweater is just purrr-fect.

2. The terrible side-effect of this is...
her friends never invite her over anymore, because she sheds on their furniture.

3. I've often suggested to Mr. LIW that we could knit a new cat out of Dino's sheddings...
My mom made similar jokes about our Corgi when I was growing up. She said she'd spin the hair into yarn and knit sweaters for all of us.

4. My Mr. Meow Meow sheds a lot, too.
He's like Pigpen on the Peanuts...he leaves a cloud of fuzz everywhere he goes.

7. That type of thing isn't as odd as you'd think.
I know a nice woman who makes a living by knitting sweaters out of cat and rabbit fur. Some of her creations are quite lovely, even though I wouldn't want to smell the result of getting caught in the rain while wearing one of her sweaters.

If you're ever in Yellow Springs Ohio (HIPPY TOWN!) during a "street fair", you can pick out the rabbit or cat that you'd like to wear as a fashion statement, and she'll make it for you. I figure that she can't be THAT unique.

8. As with all sweaters, you'll eventually have to wash it, right?
So I wonder how a cat sweater smells after it's been laundered, or even if it can be washed.

This is kinda crazy coo coo, ya know? :D

10. In all honesty, I don't suppose goats smell much better than cats.
Probably worse, in fact.

Still, it's kind of weird to see her spinning yarn out of a hairy cat while it's just sitting there patiently.

12. Well, it's odd that it made the news.
I suppose people could use dryer lint to make sweaters, too.

18. If it is the one in the picture it is absolutely beautiful.
I can't believe that. Well, I can in that there is definitely enough cat fur around here to knit sweaters out of, but I can't believe that the final product would look that good. Wow. I guess she died the wool too. I wish it was enough of a close-up to see the pattern. Well, I guess since lots of fur collars and cuffs are actually cat and dog fur it's feasible it could be done the hard way as well.

If you look at the slideshow at the link, she's holding Smokey, and her sweater is exactly the same color.

It looks to me, though, that the sweater would shed horribly...look at the slideshow...there are closeups of the sweater, and it looks like it sheds a lot.

23. I see.
It looks like a tremendous amount of work went into it. It looks to me like those old angora sweaters we used to wear when I was in high school, which were very furry and always made me sneeze (and sweat, too). Well, my hat is off to her; I've seen a whole lot of demonstrations of spinning wool and thread and the amount of work that goes into that from start to finish is something that I'm not interested in, lol.

25. The lace stitch (I guess that's what you call it)...
around the bottom of the sweater really is pretty.

Yeah, she put a lot of work into it. My hat's off to her for recycling in earnest.

21. "What fur?" "Cat fur." "Cat fur to make kitten britches."
I don't know.
We used to say that.
Now I have no idea.

22. I had a great uncle in Texas who used to say that!
OMG, I thought he was the only one in the world who said it.

Thanks for giving me a fond memory of Uncle Wilburn.
