Saw "Other People's Lives" on Friday night.
I suggest you RUN to see it if it plays in your area. Here is the imdb link: http://imdb.com/title/tt0405094/

This is the film that won the Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film. We had meant to see it prior to the awards, but when it won, that only propelled us to see it before it left the theater.

It is a German language film, so reading will be required. I understand very little German, yet found that I was able to read and follow it perfectly. It is a moving story, making the political personal when the old East German spying-on-the-citizens program puts a government worker on the listening end of a play write and his girlfriend and muse.

Here are some pic to entice you:

2. YES! That movie was excellent.
I also saw it last week. It was so fascinating. A very quiet movie, but not the least bit boring. I've been telling people they should see it; unfortunately I don't think anyone's been listening.

3. A lot of people think that reading subtitles will be tedious.
It really isn't at all. They keep the subtitles simple and streamline the words so you can read quickly and keep an eye on the action.

It's a shame more people won't see foreign films. And, we go to see them at a small independent chain in Los Angeles. There is simply more access than in a smaller, more rural place. The small rural kentucky town my family is from originally doesn't have a movie theater for 30 miles.

4. I'm in the Boston area so we tend to get the independent and foreign films
Everyone I mentioned it to had never heard of it. And you know how it is, when someone's never heard of a movie, they're not particularly interested. I was amazed at how good it was; the story was so intriguing. The man I went with told me that he has trouble sitting still for a long period of time, so I shouldn't be surprised if he has to leave his seat for a while. He was so into the movie that he didn't get up once.
