Greatest movie soundtrack?

For non-classical, I'd give it to Ennio Morricone, for "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". Totally redefined the genre's music, and very cool as well.

For classical, maybe Prokofiev's score for Alexander Nevsky?

46. Yeah, the Mission is great--I'd also have to include Dr. Zhivago, and

Lawrence of Arabia, as well as Cinema Paradiso. Can't pick the best from these four.

As for Amadeus, they didn't alter Mozart's music at all--didn't repeat a chord, a note, etc., other than what good old Wolfgang actually wrote and composed. However, they did alter Saleri's music.

The unreleased soundtrack for the 1987 Hellraiser movie. New Line Cinema was overwhelmed by Coil's morbid interpretation of the story and commissioned a crappy orchestral piece.

Just reading the title of the thread caused me to start humming the TGTB&TU theme!

However, there are several others that come to mind, particularly Days Of Heaven (Morricone again!) and Legends Of The Fall (James Horner...yes, the same guy who was responsible for Titanic :puke: , but this one was vastly better).

The Vangelis Blade Runner sound track is great.

Koyaanisqatsi - Phillip Glass is awesome. I was lucky enough to see that movie projected on the big screen with a live music from the Phillip Glass Ensemble (including PG himself.)

And lets not forget the scores to the various Lord of the Rings movies.

27. 'The Wild Bunch' and 'The Gaunlet' by Jerry Fielding

'The Wild Bunch' is one of my favorite movies but the film score is
my all-time favorite. Jerry Fielding(RIP 1980) was brilliant. The
best CD is the Warner Music USA-23 track CD as opposed to the Euro editions.

Hugo Friedhofer is also one of my favorite film score composers. His
score to 'Solider of Fortune' and 'Between Heaven and Hell' is sublime.

Another of my favorite scores is to Michael Mann's film 'The Insider'.

Children of Dune also had an excellent score- and it was only a TV movie. The makers of Master & Commander actually used it in their film's trailers.

Whether one likes the music or not (and I happen to really, really like it, and it works totally as music all on its own), the music fits so PERFECTLY with the screen action it's amazing.

Always on my toplist of soundtracks, both for the quality of the music itself, and it's amazing functionality as a soundtrack.

A very eclectic movie that holds up very well through time and a sound track that stands alone. Alan Price, as I remember, was the drummer for the Animals back in the 60's. I am going out now to find a copy.
My other favorite is the Yellow Submarine.

Streets of Fire had a great soundtrack, as did The Warriors.

The Music Man had an exceptional one.

We probably shouldn't throw Tommy or The Wall in there; both are rock operas.
