John Lennon: "There were two versions of that song but the underground left only picked up on the one the said 'Count me Out'. The original version which ends up on the LP said, 'Count me in' too. I put in both because I wasn't sure. On the version released as a single I said 'When you talk about destruction you can count me out'. I didn't want to get killed."

1. They also think "Tax Man" is rightwing, as well as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Philadelphia Freedom."
Even "My Sweet Lord" (HINDU!) made a "Top 50 Conservative Rock Songs" list.

They are truly moronic.

Every other word on that track is foreign to them.

Calling "Bodies" by the Sex Pistols an "anti-abortion" song when Johnny Rotten himself claimed it was neither for nor against abortion.

7. They don't even have clear title to Okie.
Old Merle wrote that as sort of an affectionate lampoon of his dad's politics. It's funny to check out these threads on Free Republic though. I read some tortured analysis of Stairway to Heaven as a Cold War allegory.

They also orgasm over "Battle for Evermore" and the "The tyrant's face is red" line.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not an indictment of communism. Try reading Tolkein and then getting doped up.

There's live versions of that song where the band, Merle included, is cracking up through the whole thing.

23. Because of the reference to Mao mostly, but the song celebrtates apathy
The Song "Revolution" is not Pro Revolution you know - it's about apathy - the Conservatives' best friend.

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right
Ah

ah, ah, ah, ah, ah...

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right
all right, all right, all right
all right, all right, all right

31. Because they can't understand that "our side" isn't monolithic like their side is
Lennon can ridicule lefties who "carry a picture of Chairman Mao" and still be a lefty. Lennon was very much sympathetic to left causes (and not only spoke in favor of them but bankrolled them as well); he just wasn't into the ideological extremists (neither am I).

For the right, they can't grasp the variety of viewpoints that liberalism encourages; for them, it's all black and white, for or against us, that kind of simple-minded dichotomy.

I have to say though that I am amused they picked "I fought the law" (and the law won) - or in the average freeper's case, "the law one"...hehehe.

I have heard righties try to claim "Rock The Casbah" too. Morans, every one of them.

36. exactly John was speaking as a pacifist
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 02:56 PM by Neo
Those of us who've been activist for a long time involved in protests and civil disobedience see these ragamuffins all the time. Just unfocused angry anarchists running amuck just to raise hell and "smash the state" in a most unproductive counter effective manner. The song's clearly saying "Yes I'm a leftist peacenik and I support the cause but don't condone the violent tactics" He was probably directly referring to the Weather Underground.

The latest documentary The US vs John Lennon goes more in dept with his beginnings as a peace activist.
