23. Almost entirely Irish here.
On my dad's side, he was the first one born in America.

On my mom's they've been here for centuries, but as far back as they can trace, it's almost all Scotch/Irish with a bit of English and German in there.

Also, on my dad's side, I'm distantly related to this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Collins_%28Irish_leader%29

And that makes me extra super duper Irish, I suppose. Tiocfaidh Ar La, and all that.

My great grandfather's parents came over from Ireland, then later drowned in the Rappahannock River (I'm not sure if it was before or after he was born). He was taken in and raised by the Burke family, who give their name to Burke in Fairfax County, Virginia.

We spent Christmas and New Year in our house in Co. Down. His hometown is about 10 miles outside of Newry and the view of the Mourne Mountains from our "sitting" room is quite beautiful.

I've never been able to drink Guinness, it's too heavy for me, but my grandmother used to have one bottle every day. As the ads say: "Guinness is good for you"....

He doesn't drink Guinness here in the US, but he'll have a few bottles at home. He claims that the Guinness here doesn't taste the same as in Ireland.

73. My distant cousins live in Castlebellingham
In County Louth where my great great grandfather was born and lived until the age of 19 when he made his way to America. My mother and I went to visit five years ago. We had a beautiful view of the Mourne Mountains from there, too. It's a lovely country full of lovely people. I can't wait to go back for another visit :hi:

85. Been through Castlebellingham many times on the way to and
from Dublin. However now that the road from Dublin to Dundalk is comparable to an interstate, you don't actually drive through Castlebellingham anymore, you go around it.

On our first trip to Ireland together in 1981, it took us almost 3 hours to go from the Dublin Airport to Mr. Wonderful's hometown. In fact on that particular trip to Hilltown, we stopped to get something to eat at a hotel in Castlebellingham.

86. Our Irish relatives
took us up to the Cooley Peninsula (?)-- I can't remember the name of the quaint little fishing village, but I do know that it was close to the border, but still in Ireland. We went to these great little shops and had lunch in an awesome little pub. We ate raw oysters that were so fresh -- they were brought in from the sea that day.

One of my cousins commutes to Dublin and she drives that interstate. They also greeted President Clinton from an overpass on that route as his motorcade drove by on a visit. Oh, how they love Clinton and hate Bush.

I just learned that my mother's ancestors, all from County Louth, did not live too far from my father's ancestors, who were from Cullyhanna, County Armagh.

:hi:

113. The name of the fishing village is Omeath.
It's right across Carlingford Lough from Warrenpoint, Co. Down.

I've spent many summer Sunday afternoons in Omeath. You can get a rowboat in the harbor in Warrenpoint that will take you across Carlingford Lough to Omeath. When my nieces and nephews were younger, going to Omeath was one of the things they loved to do for fun. In fact, there used to be a British gunboat that used to patrol the "northern" side of Carlingford Lough, but I think it's out of commission now.

117. OMG -- that's it!
My cousin talked about the gunboat patrolling during "the troubles". The major route ran along the waterfront, but the little shops and restaurants ran parallel a block away. It seemed to be a popular destination. My memory is not the greatest, but I seem to remember a ship museum, or something that was docked in the bay that we went onto.

Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 06:42 PM by Blue in Portland
I found out as an adult that I was adopted, and I always thought I was Irish. I decided I can still claim to be, especially around St. Patrick's Day. I have a friend who is half Irish, and she and I look a lot alike, so I probably am Irish. I definitely wanna be. And I loves me some Guinness. I bought some stout for a Guinness fondue and found it to be a delightful beverage.

For the record, I am NOT a fan of St. Patrick, since he drove paganism out of Ireland. Or so he thought.

Edit: And I'm going to drink Guinness in Ireland in October. This will be the first time I've been further east than Nag's Head, NC, so you have NO idea how excited I am! :bounce: :bounce::bounce::bounce:

131. 100% lace curtain...
Mair ar son na troda...

And every Irish thread must have a poem:

THE LOVE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

133. Not Irish but geographically very close.
Mom's side is Scots-Irish. Oppressed the Northerns and tried to make 'em all Presbyterians. When I read "Angela's Ashes" it took me a while to figure out what they meant when people said the author's father was one of "those queer Northern Presbyterians". The main thing they passed down was funny looking noses and a tendency toward drunkenness, which I have fortunately avoided. I don't like the stuff.

Dad's side is British; I know very little about them.
