32. No but well aware of the incident.
Bloody Sunday (Irish: Domhnach na Fola) is the term used to describe an incident in Derry, Northern Ireland, on 30 January 1972 in which 26 civil rights protesters were shot by members of 1st Battalion of the British Parachute Regiment led by Lieutenant-Colonel Derek Wilford and his second-in-command Captain Mike Jackson, who had joint responsibility for the operation; during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in the Bogside area of the city. Thirteen people, six of whom were minors, died immediately, while the death of another person 4½ months later has been attributed to the injuries he received on the day. Two protesters were injured when run down by army vehicles.<1> Many witnesses including bystanders and journalists testify that all those shot were unarmed. Five of those wounded were shot in the back.

Paddy and Mick are both common nicknames (For Patrick or Padraic and Michael), but because they're so common, they were used as names to call all Irish people by and became derogatory. But they're also still common nicknames.

It's a matter of sectarian Northern Ireland politics. Ulster Catholics tend to wish for a united Ireland and Ulster Protestants tend to want to keep the union with Britain. And it all goes downhill from there.

76. I'm an Englishman of Irish extraction
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 03:11 PM by Anarcho-Socialist
St. Patrick's Day is no more or less a waste of time than Christmas or Easter.

EDIT: and what is the deal with the anti-English terms? Being Irish is not being about everything anti-England or anti-Britain. Ireland has many positive cultures and institutions, and the Irish and British working classes share many cultural traits.

82. I have Irish ancestors, and I don't give a damn about St. Patty's day.
Ireland had a cool, lusty pagan thing going on before St. Patrick came along. Thanks to him, I've got a family full of uptight Catholics. Bastard!

83. here, here!
The Druids on the neighboring island (don't know if they were in Ireland too) were way cooler than the Christians.

88. You'd better be glad you didn't say that in person.
I'd tie you to a chair, spray paint you green (water soluble, I'm not a monster), make you drink Guinness, get sloshed myself, sing "Danny Boy" horribly off-key for a couple of hours, glue plastic shamrocks to your hair (Elmer's), put a sign in your lap that said, "I (shamrock) the Irish!," take several pictures to post on DU, and only then free you.

So THERE! :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P
