Crazy people. The crazy people who think "you're" the crazy one.

I'm watching a dance right now between a crazy and a sane. It's a waltz of emotional death/suicide.

3. I have seen this a lot, in nonprofit organizations, of all places!
There just are some organizations that are dysfunctional psychologically! They do good work but they can't get it together to treat employees well. It's a problem for people who want to work there but get discouraged by the emotional landscape.

I put up with this for many years. Altho I now work very part time for a nonprofit, I don't have many of the problems that I did with my full time, nonprofit work. I had a very frank conversation with the CEO at the outset of my part time employment and we agreed on some ground rules. That helped a lot!

38. I'm so glad to read your post.....
I recently quit a non-profit organization. I LOVED what I did but the president of the board had created a totally dysfunctional environment and treated the employees like shit. I've had trouble adjusting to not working there wondering if it was just me (it wasn't as the place had 5 directors in 2 years.) Thank you so much for your post!

Like when he gave me my review, and told me I "used too many sticky notes" and I told him he was incapable of giving a fair review, only to have HR back him up and fire me?

15. Heh?
Entertaining isn't it? Well, probably not! I worked at a place where I knew of 3 suicide attempts at the work site (with a staff of about 30). One occurred right before I was hired (that resulted in my position being created), and the other two while I was there. Unfortunately, the ones making the attempt were probably sanest. They were driven to it by the crazy people.

17. Isn't That Really Always The Case?
I mean from a systems perspectives, the ones who act out and make the attempts are really screaming out that the system is SICK!

Of course, to practice from a systems perspective requires one to bypass the common procedural terminology of the AMA and to make judgments of the functionality of the system rather than focusing on the individual.

From a systems perspective, the "crazy" one is almost always just acting out the system's sickness.

20. You Can Try...
it's a well researched theory, systems theory... usually embraced by family therapists in school, and then dropped by the wayside when they realize that payment is based on coding and coding systemic problems is too ambiguous and rarely covered by 3rd party payors.

But sure, give it a try.

26. The sane quit. The crazy totally lost it and was verbally abusive and demeaning.
Mr. Sane listened to her rant for about 5 minutes, then said "this relationship isn't working" and walked toward his car. Crazy told him to not walk away from her and he said, "Hey, I'm a free person. I can do anything I want, and I want to leave." I know this guy. He's pretty rational.

I'm thinking that I may not want to work for someone who treats people like that.

30. for real
Man, that is awful, because from here on out you are playing your odds; it seems like ever y time I've seen nutty behavior from someone and stayed around despite it, I always have ended up on the receiving end of it myself eventually. It's like one of those laws of nature or something. Yep, it's always the sane ones that walk. Sigh.

Although, as an afterthought I have to add I had a boss that was abusive to me for two years, yelling, screaming, cursing, the whole nine yards. I was determined I wouldn't leave that job until after he did. One day he dropped some info that I knew wouldn't match up to records they had in the security office. I told myself I would sit on the info til his next temper tantrum, which was three months. That was the last time he ever screamed and cursed at me. I went up to personnel, dropped the info in their laps, they pulled the security records and fired him the next day. I just got fed up.

36. what a way to have to spend your weekend

I just got lucky with my old job; my boss let it drop that he was padding certain employees timecards, by adding onto their time through the computer. So I knew that when they came in the security gate and scanned their badges, it was recorded in the computer when they entered and left. And when he added extra hours on to his favorite people's paychecks, they would have already scanned their badges out of the gate, so couldn't have been in the building. The moment of that realization was one of the most satisfying moments of my life, lol. But I still waited for him to be abusive again, just so I wouldn't feel terrible about it when I did drop the bomb at h.r. What killed me is no matter how many employees he screamed and swore at and no matter how many women went up to h.r. in tears (because he was mainly this way to women), h.r. didn't do anything. It was so funny their reaction when I went up there and told him he was paying people that weren't even in the building for the hours they were getting paid for. They FREAKED. You have to hit 'em in the wallet, where it counts; otherwise they will tolerate all kinds of insanity from middle management. Sigh.

Good luck this weekend...there is something much better waiting out there for you.

39. It's so nice to work in a crazy-free office now
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 11:28 PM by Strawman
That's the one good thing that came from our company getting acquired and downsized to the bone three years ago (from 80 to 20). All the crazies were taken out (unfortunately so were alot of non-crazies, but they all seem to have landed on their feet elsewhere). Through attrition we're down to 14. Everyone who survived and/or decided to stay is nice.

I never have to look at my caller ID or email or see someone approaching my office and think "Fuck. Not this asshole." That's a nice feeling.

:scared: They'll eventually annihilate each other, but the one sane person in the office besides me is caught in the middle. One of the crazies is about to get fired---I just haven't decided when to do it.

I do enjoy having the authority to get rid of at least some of the bullshit. :)
