Make a list of artists you love in ONE genre/style of music
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 11:34 PM by mvd
The genre/style can be as broad as you like, and the list can include up to 30 artists.

I'm going to list modern pop/rock singers I love:

The Corrs
Michelle Branch
Avril Lavigne
The Veronicas
Alison Ray
Candice Accola
Hope 7
Barenaked Ladies
Fountains Of Wayne
Adrienne Pierce
The Fratellis
Nina Gordon
Damone
Lillix
The Oohlas
Jag Star
The Randies
Susan Cagle
Jesse Malin
Brooke (from MySpace - unsigned)
The Charade
The Like
New Pornographers
Brie Larson
Courtney Jaye
Julia Othmer
M2M/Marion Raven
newer Mandy Moore
Aslyn
Bonnie McKee

There are more, but I set my limit at 30. Some I love are more singer/songwriter than pop/rock (Anna Nalick, Stacie Rose, Cindy Alexander, Bree Sharp) or more indie-pop (The Shins, Tilly And The Wall, Rilo Kiley, The Pierces)

2. Why 30? WHy not 25 or 28 or twenty-nine-and-a-half?
Or does "newer Mandy Moore" count as 29 1/2?

4. I just thought like 30 sounded like a good cutoff
I could go on for longer, but the idea is to sample.

15. *lol* glad you approve! I don't know that I could limit myself to 30 for
rock/pop...
If I had to go with Top Ten in that category, I'd have to say:

Split Enz/Crowded House/Neil Finn (cheating, yeah, but hey! TEN!)
Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Zeppelin
Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd
The Police/Sting
Clapton
The Pretenders
and today, anyway...Audioslave.

19. My list isn't limited - just stopped there
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 07:25 PM by mvd
There are definitely a lot more if I include older artists. I could have included Leslie Mills, My Chemical Romance, Green Day (they border on punk,) Tuuli, Kelly Clarkson, The Donnas, etc. just for newer artists.

Your top 10 is great. I'm not a big Clapton or Audioslave fan, but I like the rest. If I included older pop/rock, I'd have to add The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis, The Bangles, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, The Go Gos, The Cars, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp...

25. *lol* You've added a lot of good ones...I thought a lot about the Beatles,
natch, and I love Simon and Garfunkel and Fleetwood Mac (especially pre-1976 - Buckingham and Nicks were a great addition and took the band in a new direction, but I love the old blues-based stuff so much..."Mystery to Me" was the first CD I ever bought, once I finally got a CD player)

Audioslave is one of the few newer bands that I really like...so many of them have GREAT music, and I hear something that starts out awesome, and then the "singer" steps up to the mic, and they've lost me with their mindless unintelligible screaming. Chris Cornell has a fucking amazing voice, and I love the music and the lyrics, which I can actually understand!!

I do love Green Day, and I find Chemical Romance rather clever...I don't think I could listen to an entire album's worth of MCR, but Green Day rocks. I also like Incubus and Modest Mouse and White Stripes and Beck and some other more recent artists, but I tend to like the 'classic rock' era best.

28. I'm one of those who loves classic rock the most overall, but..
also loves a lot of new music. I'm pretty equal opportunity. :-) There's some no-talent out there now, but a lot of thrilling stuff, too. The Black Parade by MCR is very listenable throughout IMO. Like Green Day, they add some slower, classic-rock styled songs to give a break from the raucousness. Cleverly dark is a good way to describe their lyrics!

Good talking with you, grannylib. Good night! :hi:

8. Indie pop suggestions
Rhino Records has some compilations called Poptopia that are a great way to hear a bunch of indie pop bands.

The dB's are my all-time favorite indie pop band. Most of their old albums have been reissued on CD.

Marshall Crenshaw and Tommy Keene are worth checking out.

Hope that helps

26. Once I stop being lazy, I plan to make what I call a "deathtempo" album.
It'll be really dark downtempo music a la DJ Shadow, but of course way darked and featuring samples about serial killers and shit.

21. Again, great list
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 07:32 PM by mvd
Kudos for including The Monkees and The Jackson Five. Sometimes they don't get much credit here, and they are deserving IMO. Same today with Hanson's latest music and to a lesser degree The Click Five.

I am a music collector and have music as a huge hobby, so that's why I can expand so much on my lists.
