TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A Tacoma judge ignored a plea bargain and sentenced a former Buckley teacher to six months in jail for having sex with a 17-year-old student in April, 2006.

Rebekah M. Todd, 25, had expected a sentence of 30 days in home detention when she appeared Friday in Pierce County Superior Court. She had pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree assault.

Prosecutors said they had evidence she performed oral sex on the White River High School boy. The health and physical education teacher resigned after she was accused and forfeited her teaching certificate.

The deputy prosecutor, Hugh Birgenheier, says the judge, Bryan Chushcoff, decided not to follow the recommendation from the plea bargain.

An ex of mine had an affair with his 8th grade teacher back in '74, and at my Catholic high school in the mid-70s, there were several girls having affairs with various male and female teachers. Two of the girls ended up marrying the the teachers after they left school.

19. I knew two students in my high school who were sleeping with teachers.

One woman, one man. Neither got caught. We all thought it was gross, but not "traumatizing" or any of the other things it gets labeled. Both students were late 16 or early 17 years old (not sure when they started it). This was in the early 80s.

I know all age/maturity questions aside a relationship like that is hghly unethical even if it weren't illegal.

I spent some time teaching science at an Alternative School (as part of my graduate studies) and it would've been RIDICULOUSLY easy to fall into something like this. Granted it was an altenative school, so all the students who were there were troubled in some fashion or other--but even if the students aren't "troubled" adolescence just seems to make you wide open for "a few kind words, a little bit of charm" wink wink wink etc.

For the record, I have self control and some semblance of ethical behaviour, and so did all of the other faculty there--but I would be shocked if that were universally the case.

13. One of my best H.S. friends was the principal's daughter.

She moved in with the music teacher her senior year. They rode together to school. They were together many years.

This was about 1980 and there was no mention of prosecution or jail time.

17. A couple of years after I got out of HS

the woman who was my ninth grade health ed teacher was caught having a fling with an unnamed student.

This was about 1986. She was 30. She "resigned", not fired, no criminal charges filed.

Saw her about seven years ago. Still married to her husband. And actually teaching in another district.

18. I don't get it

I was a high school teacher when I was in my mid-20s, and for the life of me, the thought of having any sort of fling with one of my students was just ridiculous. Even though I was within a few years of the age of my seniors, they were like a completely different species...and not an attractive species at that...

Just did a Google. In Washington, where this case is held, the age of consent is 16, except for school employees, where the age of consent is graduation. That "school employee" rule is apparently the case in several states.

The age of consent in many states is 17, and in some, 16, though there is usually an age differential limit for someone that young. For instance, in Florida (I know this from an episode of CSI: Miami), the age of consent is 16 if the partner is 24 or younger.
