Poll question: Hardcore bands that went to crap (inspired by a couple recent threads)

The opinions are not mine, but are what could be for some. I understand that there had to be a natural progression for a lot of these acts, and often that progression worked, but here are a few that come to mind.

2. COC.

What a meltdown. loved "Animosity". "Blind" was amazing but I smelled trouble with the "Dance of the Dead" track. "Deliverance"? Uh... Ok, whatever. Then total shite. A couple good track on "Americas Volume Dealer" though.

I consider them a totally different band than recorded Eye for An Eye and Animosity. But I like them as a southern metal band as well.

18. Not really as far as members go...

Reed Mullen and Pepper Keenan and Woody Weatherman are still in the band I believe, all 3 of whom where around back in their hardcore days. I could be wrong about that though. But musically they are completely different.

3. You could make an arguement that all those were letdowns.

I'm not sure I'd say they all "went to crap" mind you,but all the choices are good examples a great bands doing subpar work.Though I will say that the song Stars and Stripes of Corruption single-handedly makes Frankenchrist a worthwhile investment.

Except for TSOL. I was never a big fan to begin with, but their glam phase was particularly awful.

I still shake my head when I see them called a great punk band.But to each their own I guess.

5. Oh, TSOL were by FAR the worst offenders of those listed.

They were SO FUCKING GREAT, then "Revenge" and "Hit & Run?" That shit made me die, not even Celtic Frost's Cold Lake was that artistically offensive.

Didn't those have something to do with no original band members having the rights to the name and wasn't Hit and Run just a group of "scabs" who finegled the rights to the name?

Revenge wasn't great but it was nowhere near as bad as Hit and Run.

Mike Roche definitely was.

And I believe you're correct, "Revenge" wasn't as bad. It had one good song. ;)

10. Can I add the Misfits?

I don't know that they were technically "hardcore" but just as much as the rest of the bands listed. And their reunion period without Danzig was much MUCh worse than anything any of the other listed bands put out. At least the DK reunion lineup without Jello has refrained from recording any new material.

Speaking of which Suicidal Tendencies would be another good one, as they not only turned to shit musically, but actually Re-Recorded their classic self titled debut album, admittedly only because they never really saw any money from the original recording.

Cro-Mags would be another one. Alpha Omega and Near Death Experience? Put up against Age of Quarrel? No thanks.

26. Still Cyco After All These Years was garbage.

That's when Mike Muir was into the whole Infectious Grooves thing.

As for the Misfits, I couldn't agree more. I know Jerry and Doyle just wanted to get paid, but man did they Kiss-ify the Misfits' legacy.*

*Kissify- v. - to reunite a musical act on a wave of nostalgia, merchandise said musical act to death.

Pepper Keenan joining that group turned them into a generic crapcake of ersatz southern stoner. And I'm sorry, but I loved Technocracy.

ST was another that came to mind. Jesus that band truly SUCKS at metal and funk rawk.

15. I thought Wiseblood was actually a good album, for what it was.

Everything else, not so much. And yes, Technocracy was still good, even if Simon Bob Sinister was their worst vocalist.

That's in my mind one of the best EP's of that crossover time period. I always get beat on (figuratively speaking) for saying I prefer it to Animosity or even Eye For an Eye.

20. I thought the guitar tone was quite unique and heavy for the time.

I didn't really mind SBS's vocals as much as others did (hey, I liked Sean Killian's (Vio-Lence) vocals also, so what do I know?). The production was a lot grittier and raw sounding. I think I still have that on tape somewhere, although the condition might suck.

It's a shame they never got the exposure they deserved. They were awesome recorded and amazing live.

29. Vio-Lence was the most fun I've ever had in a pit.

Constant diving and surfing. It had been a while since they came to Cleveland and everyone was there to see them. That was one of the Empire's most rowdy pits.

30. No Pit Action When I Got To See Them.

They opened up for Voivod in the first of a long series of metal shows in the annex of a local hockey stadium. No one really knew about the show so about 100 people showed up. I just got to stand about 3-feet from the speakers and take it all in. They were very very tight and insanely loud. One of, if not the best live shows I've ever seen.

The difference between their first albums and their most recent are not that drastically different. At least nowhere near in the realm of the other bands being mentioned on here. They were barely a punk band to begin with.

But I like their new stuff as well. I just think that they've aged with a slight deal more dignity than many of their contemporaries back then did both in part because they were never really outwardly in tune with the trends back then, and they've never full jumped on any trends since then. I can see not liking their more rootsy material but I've never doubted their (or more accurately Mike Ness's) sincerity.

The only thing that did irk me is how he spent the better part of the mid to late 80's going out of his way in interviews to claim he really wasn't punk or had anything to do with punk. Then when it became popular in the 90's the few shows I saw them he would talk about punk rock and ask everyone if they were ready to hear some punk rock.

25. I didn't add Social D,

because I don't believe, by definition, they were a "hardcore" band. From watching that old documnetary "Another State of Mind," they did roll with that scene, but stylistically they were more midtempo pop-punk if anything.

28. Agreed, Social D always had more pop influence than any in your poll

And I feel they always had a "rootsy" influence as well.
