Girl finds missing dog's head in box on doorstep
WTF is wrong with people???? Sick sick SICK :grr: :grr: :grr:

LINK

A 17-year-old girl who spent weeks looking for her missing dog unwrapped a box left on her doorstep and found the pet's severed head inside, authorities said. Homicide investigators were looking into the case because of the "implied" terroristic threat, St. Paul Police Sgt. Jim Gray said. The Humane Society of the United States said Wednesday it was offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

"This was extraordinarily heinous," said Dale Bartlett, the Humane Society's deputy manager for animal cruelty issues. "I deal with hundreds and hundreds of cruelty cases each year. When I read about this case, it took my breath away. It's horrible."

After Crystal Brown's 4-year-old Australian shepherd mix,Chevy, wandered away last month, she put up "missing" posters in her neighborhood and went door to door looking for him. She called the St. Paul animal shelter and rode the bus there several times.

"I felt empty," Crystal told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. "I couldn't talk to anyone. He was my dog. It was just me and him. ... I told him everything and he never shared any of my secrets."

Two weeks ago, a gift-wrapped box was left at the house Crystal shares with her grandmother. The box had batteries on top, and a note that said "Congratulations Crystal. This side up. Batteries included."

Crystal opened the box and found her dog's head inside. The box also contained Valentine's Day candy.

1. Whoever did that is dangerous
He/she is a danger to the community, and needs to be found and locked up immediately.

The person who perpetrated this is a danger to society in general and that little girl in particular.

serial killer in the making.

6. That's terrible however...
...why was her dog wandering around unleashed? It angers me that so many dog "owners" don't realize that leashes are for the animal's safety. I see dogs roaming all the time and it's saddening because you know a great deal of them will end up being hit by cars, euthanized at the pound or worse.

I hate that happened to her and Chevy and hope she takes better care of her new puppy, Diesel.

And I hope the sick jerk that did this gets their "'nads nailed to the wall."

11. Sometimes dogs get out, despite the owners best efforts. I have
often referred to my dog as "Houdini" because of her extraordinary abilities to escape. It doesn't necessarily mean that an owner is negligent if you see a dog wandering loose.

15. I have a 14-year-old Spitz/Border Collie mix...
...who is about the best thing in my life. She's a great companion and it would devastate me if something like this happened to her.

I've had dogs my whole life and we never let any of them out unleashed. The dachshund we had when I was a kid got out a few times and whenever she did, we were always right behind her trying to catch up because we knew the dangers that awaited.

Dogs are a lot like children in their blissful ignorance to the ominous workings of the human world. I would no more let a dog out unsupervised than I would a three-year-old human.

Sometimes, my dog (recently deceased) would get out of the fence. Sometimes it's not carelessness.

21. Especially with this breed
My room mate just brought an Australian Cattle Dog puppy (now 6 months - but looks fully grown compared to some other breeds) home about 2 months ago. They are very high energy and he attempts to escape every time the door is opened for any reason. I'm hoping that the excitement of the door will pass, but he has to be restrained in the house if you want to open the door to do regular things .. like carry in groceries or let the kids come in after school even.

My heart goes out to the owner. They are very sweet, very social dogs. I can feel her devastation from here.

33. We adopted one about a year ago when she wandered into the driveway.
She was barely alive...full of worms, mange, starving ... and deaf. Now everything but the deaf is fixed and she
manages to dig under the fence to go exploring. I think the high-energy is responsible, our other dogs get along
fine with her but she wants to romp and chase endlessly. They can't keep up so she gets out looking for some
canines to carouse with. (She's spayed so it isn't an estrus thing). Our yard is an acre so it's not a matter of
too little space, I can't bring myself to tie her up. We are thinking of an electric fence.

30. Why do you immediately jump to the conclusion she's at blame?
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 12:34 PM by hlthe2b
That SHE is irresponsible.... I don't know how her dog got out, but it may have been an instantaneous mistake--like a neighbor coming into the house and accidentally leaving a gate or door open for just a second.

Good God, hasn't she suffered? Why immediately conclude SHE shares in the blame?

Perhaps you didn't mean to. This entire episode is so horrendous, I'd like to think everyone would be very cautious about jumping to such conclusions...Your post comes off as so very callous...

BTW, a puppy was stolen from a locked car, here in Denver a few weeks ago. The news segment was wrenching with the Mom and her teenage daughter just devastated. Were they TOO at fault for having taken the dog with them, even though the car WAS LOCKED?

40. How do you know the dog wasn't taken from a fenced yard?
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 01:39 PM by China_cat
It happens. We had a ring of kids around here stealing dogs from people's yards. Most people thought that they had left the gate open or somehow otherwise screwed up and let the dog get out.

Our thieves got caught when they asked me to take my dogs in (our gate is padlocked) because they were lunging at the fence and they couldn't get 'their' dog who had wandered into the yard next door. The only problem with that was that the dog they were trying to claim as theirs was 15 years old and had lived there for more than 14 of those. I called the cops then and then again when they came back and tried to take the dogs out of the yard across the street.

This was said to be a therapy dog. When you invest that much time and energy into training such an animal, you DON'T let them wander.

Quite frankly, the fact that the head was left on her doorstep points more to the possibility of the dog being taken in order to 'make a statement' to her.

17. I wonder if the target was the girl or the dog.
This could be either a case of someone who's been pissed off by the dog, and wants to get revenge on the owner, or of someone who's been stalking the girl and is using the dog to get at her.

I hope it's the former, for her sake.

...but how is it 'terroristic'? I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick and tired of using "turr", and "turrists" and the "war on turr" as a blanket excuse for everything....

The REALLY sad thing is that when they catch the sick fuck that did this, the most serious charges will be the "turr" ones and not the ones attached to murdering that defenseless dog...

31. on the bright side, they will catch the guy
This is entirely too specific for it to be some random nutter. More than likely the dog did not escape but was stolen. He waited long enough for the knife to really twist in her, then leaves her the present. The cops can start with people she knows. It might be a former boyfriend or some turd who's lusting from afar and she is unaware of the interest. But it's gotta be someone close.

35. How horrible.
Authorities say the case is an isolated incident and the suspect likely knew the family. A motive is unclear.

I agree whoever did this knew the child and is threatening her perhaps?

This makes it even more tragic: "I told him everything and he never shared any of my secrets," said Crystal, 17, who has had some troubled times in her young life. Chevy was her therapy dog, and she leaned on him for comfort and support." http://www.centredaily.com/128/story/42059.html

Seems like a 'warning' of sorts, to keep a secret or else?
