28. Recently, I was told that one of my babies needed emergency exploratory surgery.

The Dr. told me that my toy poodle would die without it. I was told that the cost of the surgery was $5,000.00. Of course, I looked shocked when I was quoted the price, but what shocked me more was what the Vet's assistant said to me:

''So, This is a very expensive surgery - What do you want us to do?"

Excuse me, but I ouldn't believe they were asking me this -- in other words, asking me if they should put down a two year old dog.

Of course, I said to go ahead with the surgery.

What was truly insane though, was the phone call I received at 2:30 in the morning from the Animal Hospital.

Vet: Booly has come out of surgery and everything went fine".
Me: So, what was wrong with him?
Vet: Nothing.

our Tonka had surgery on his ear for almost $2,000. It saved him from ear infections that could kill him so I would pay anything.

The 2 cats I still have are 17 years old and have been here since they were about a week old. They've never known anything else. No amount of money could ever make up for what relocating would do to them...even into a 'good' home.

Daphne (12 year old pug mix) has scars all over her from where a former 'owner' burned her and a place around her neck where her collar was allowed to grow into her flesh. It took almost a year before she started to believe that she wasn't going to have to go someplace else to live again. I doubt she'd ever trust another human being if I were to give (or sell) her to someone else.

Dotty has been here since she was 13 weeks old. She's 9. She might adapt if rehomed but gets really upset when we leave her at the groomer's.

Jake and Elwood were bought as status symbols by people with more dollars than sense, physically taken care of but not allowed to interact with the family, never allowed in the house and discarded when they started to show some resentment about it. Then locked in a kennel for 2 years. They're 8 years old, brothers and never knew what a couch was until they came to live here in Jan of this year. Jake is adapting well but Elwood seems like he's still waiting to be shoved back in a cage.

Which one of these lives would it be worth making miserable just for money?

I would never sell a person for any amount of money.

As much as I like my cat, I just don't put him on the same level as a person. If someone offers enough money and a good home for him, he is gone.

I posted my hypothetical question on a forum frequented by both righties and lefties, and the righties had the same reaction as the lefties... No sale.

Of course, I suspect that a lot of people who say they wouldn't sell their pets for any amount of money probably would if really faced with such an opportunity.

I would be hard pressed to surrender the dogs under any circumstances.

The bird however really needs to find a new good home. Why? One of the dogs wants to kill it - and has started catching birds in the backyard. The other dog simply chooses to ignore the bird. The bird for his part realizes he is safe in his cage. He is fearless and taunts and teases the dogs. That is bad enough but that is not the real reason the bird needs a new home.

The real reason is that I have aging parents who are spending an increasing amount of time in my home. Dad has allergies and asthma that is triggered by bird dander. His doctor has deemed the bird off limits. Whenever Dad comes the bird is hustled off and boarded with the vet. The bird is very well behaved - even though he is sometimes an odd creature (aren't all birds a bit odd?). The people and their medical conditions are the problem not the bird.

I am attached to the bird and simply cannot bring myself to place an ad to sell the bird and all his stuff. And nobody I know is willing or able to take the bird in. I'd like to get a bit of money for the bird and all his stuff. Mostly I just feel like whoever takes him in should make some investment in him however small that might be. Truth be told I would give the bird to someone I was convinced would care for him and provide a long-term home. Especially if they had experience with birds and a vet reference.

I have had the bird for about two years. He is a young well behaved Quaker with a long life ahead. I don't have any major behavior problems with him. He really does deserve a second chance.
