2. My kids each tried that
ONCE.

When they're really sick - they get to lay on the couch and watch tv and I wait on them hand and foot.

When they're pretending to be sick - they have to lay in bed, lights off, no books, and I pretty much ignore them except to make sure they're doing NOTHING.

7. That would be the correct approach!
I guess I'm indulging him. He's eating an apple and playing with legos and I'm allowing it to happen. :(

3. After near perfect attendance in elementary school,
my son discovered that "my head hurts" and a pathetic look on your face will get you out of class in middle school. After the third call in month, I said I was making a doctor's appointment the next time. That was in October--hasn't happened since. Scammer!

P.S. Lest anyone jump my case about vision exams, brain tumors, etc., his "headache" would miraculously disappear within 30 minutes of getting home and eating something. Upon further interrogation I found out he was skipping lunch to play basketball. Again I say, Scammer!

9. Laughing.
My oldest son would call once weekly with a "stomach ache" (exactly what Henry claimed today) but I think he actually had one. He'd lie down in the nurse's office for thirty minutes and then he'd be good to go. Maybe his brother suffers from the same affliction.

Skipping lunch to play basketball! What kind of child are you raising?! :P

If I could devise a point system for eating where he could conceivably "win" he might have more interest.

5. My mother
was a med tech and worked in a medical clinic. The rule in our house was that if you are too sick to be in school then you are sick enough that you need to see the doctor. Of course, we kids did not realize at the time that mom and dad had known the good doctor long before he had enrolled in medical school. A school absence always meant a trip to see the doctor. He had a pretty good eye for fakers. Faking it invariably resulted in dropping ones pants and bending over to get a shot. Real illnesses usually were treated with antibiotics.

I suppose there probably are some distasteful yet fairly harmless substances available that could serve the same purpose without a trip to see a doctor.

If Henry does this again I will be considering various deterrents.

6. Ha! From grades 1-5 or so, I must've done that at least once a month...
if not more often. I think I was in the nurse's office more than the classroom. :P

17. My mom was an RN... we couldn't ever fake being sick!
The rule in our house was "If you don't have a fever, you have to go to school!" And no, heating up the thermometer in various ways did not work. Besides, I think I tried that once and burned the hell out of my tongue!

20. Good point. Or at home.

Maybe he's not so much trying to avoid school as to get "Mom Time."

Just a thought. 'Cuz I pulled that scam when I was a kid and feeling especially vulnerable about something, but was unable to address it directly.

Happily, he asked to be returned to school at noon. Whatever was bothering him, he's cured!

He went back to school at lunchtime anyway. A short-term stomach ache, just like I told the school "nurse".
