fashion advice sought: so i bought these sweet shoes

i reluctantly wore them to work today (big dinner out tonight), anticipating the shit i was going to catch from certain uptight white guys. but i figured, hell, either i'm going to wear them to work or i'm never going to wear them.

sure enough, the first guy i see in the kitchen starts telling me i look like tom jones (i have sandy brown hair & i'm irish/german). or a pimp. i told him there isn't a woman in this office (100 or so) who won't like these shoes. he asks the next woman to come in the kitchen, and she replies "they're fabulous".

as a straight guy, let me ask: what the fuck is it with straight guys & fashion?

necessary schooling to have fashion sense. Especially those of us brought up in the 50's & 60's. And you have to admit that there were a lot of really crap clothes out there for men.

Added on edit: And I know some gay guys my age who dress like uptight bankers as well.

I'm not loving those shoes for myself, but with the right trousers, and shirt and jacket, they probably are pretty kickin'. I'm thinking black trousers with a subtle pin stripe not too wide or really good jeans, and a good shirt or sweater, in a color that picks up on the shoes.

I wear Eccos or Doc Martens most of the time and they're pretty stylish.

good for you for doing so and for wearing them proudly. I am just not a fan of most men's shoes (running shoes and other more practical types aside, of course) and find most men's dress shoes to be absolutely hideous, especially the kinds so prevalent in the US. I tend to favor pretty plain shoes, if I have to have them...when I was active in my scientific career the brown walker-style shoes that go so well with Dockers and the like were pretty standard as my fancy footwear (in my career field, sneakers and sandals -- wetsuit booties, more often than not -- were de rigeur) and I found a pair of basic black nubuck shoes that I liked for their simple style and extreme comfort.

Now I wear them as a necessary part of the look -- impersonating Elvis, doncha know -- but if I can't wear my trusty New Balance off-road running shoes I really do like the look and feel of these styles of classic Italian dress boots (the Beatles/Elvis boot):

they're not what i'd wear to a meeting with a client, but WTF, its friday, and i'm a design professional.

here's what guys typically wear here: company polo shirts, pleated dockers, and something practical from payless. ugh.
