Recently rented "The Holiday" and "Casion Royale"...
"The Holiday" was freaking horrible. Much as I love Kate Winslet and Jack Black, it still was godawful. I thought Cameron Diaz was actually pretty good in "In Her Shoes" but she just was horrible, awful, a train wreck in this movie. And normally I can deal with some sappiness in my chick-flicks, but this was just unbearable. Anyone else like it/hate it?

"Casino Royale" was actually pretty good - and I have no problem with a blonde Bond. Damn the man has a nice physique. But my husband walked in and said 'he {Daniel Craig) looks like Zoolander!' and all I could see in every Bond expression from that point on was Zoolander. I think it's because Craig has a long-ish upper lip, so he looked like he was pursing him lips and making "model" faces the way Stiller did in Zoolander (a movie I despise, by the way).

3. yeah, do - I don't think you'll be disappointed
It was good, good action without too much gore and also without too much of the tongue-in-cheek/double entendre stuff that got old real fast, in my opinion, in the previous Bonds. It had some of it, to be sure - enough to be entertaining but not enough to make the movie campy.

11. Sonic avec tutu!
She looks very cute, if slightly pissed. And your boys look like close friends -- does Sonia snuggle with them or is she kind of aloof?

Please feel free to hijack any of my threads with kitty pictures! Always welcome! :hi:

12. They actually get along really well!
Sonia will actually instigate the two boys! They both take turns chasing her up the stairs.

Sonia will sometime join the boys in bed with us, though she prefers to sleep with the stuffed animals in our daughter's room.

:hi:

7. yes, he is really a stunning man
but the writing/scripts had really started to suck (not Brosnan's fault) and I guess they thought the only way to revive the franchise was to get a new guy.

Brosnan is the epitome of Bond, though.

Have you seen "The Matador"? He's great in it...

17. The Matador is awesome...
I rented it based solely on the fact that it had Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear; and the clip that got shown on TV of Pierce Brosnan walking thru the hotel lobby in a Speedo, black dress socks and shoes.

And then I watched it and it was one of the best movies I've seen in years. Great plot, original, entertaining. Wow.

18. lol - the speedo scene just killed me
I thought it was a great movie, too... Kinnear is one of my favorite actors and I liked the twists in the plot.

Wow-wee. Daniel Craig is a big slab of hunky beefcake.

9. I really liked "Casino Royale."
MUCH better than Pierce Brosnan, IMHO. Fewer lame jokes, plus he got his ass kicked CONSTANTLY, and it showed (just like in real life)

14. I agree....Casino Royale was refreshing.
I don't like an "untouchable" bond...I like that it was realistic. He is still smooth and tough, but the people around him act like REAL people (or as real as you get in the movies). I really liked the dialogue between Bond and Vesper...and the way she talks back to him, lol.

I was really getting sick of all the lame gadgets, bad jokes, and stupid names for the woman. They just took it too far...the last couple of Bond films seemed to be more mockery then anything.

16. you know, you're right - no stupid gadgets
and no overtly sexual names for the women. I didn't even miss it, obviously, -- I hadn't even noticed their absence.

It was a much-needed refreshing kick to the Bond movies, that had gotten totally lame, predictable, and cringeworthy.

23. The gadgets he had actually exist:...
...the mobile computer, the defribulator and the silenced Walther P99 (which sounded very metalic for a polymer-framed gun). I don't know about the biometeric capsule. In fairness, he did need to stick it with some kind of transmitter for M-I-6 to get the medical data.

and finds out that she left him a suit. He looks pretty pissed, heh.

20. I didn't care for Casino Royale.
I think I understood what they were trying to do, a cooler updated Bond without the camp. But the result- Bond without the camp doesn't really stand out from any generic action/espionage movie out there. It didn't really have anything going for it, IMHO. And Craig? Wasn't impressed either. He mumbled a few lines and showed off his build. Where's James Bond?

22. I just bought CR after seeing it in the cinema.
The rest of my 007 collection is going in the trash. (Not really). It was gritty, visceral, violent and felt real. All the gadgets really exist. His character was human, but a harsh amoral human, and believeable. Craig and the director made 007 a flesh and blood man instead of an untouchable super hero. Craig has the face of a tough, survivor who has suffered and learned to live with it rather than the polished, unreadable faces of previous actors. I think he is only the 2nd Englishman to play the role. Connery is Scottish, Dalton is Welsh, Brosnan is Irish (or was Brosnan Welsh and Dalton Irish?) and Lazenby is Australian. Guess next they need either a New Zealander or a South African. Only Moore was actually an Englishman playing the most English of post-Holmes detectives.
