*****A DUer NEEDS YOUR GOOD VIBES AND PRAYERS*****
DUers,

First and foremost - to the mods - I don't know if I am breaking any rules by making reference to a tombstoned DUer, but please bear with me.

I just got a call from Distressed American. He and his wife and daughter were supposed to be headed to DC tonight for the protest. I am the designated dog-sitter (it's my way of sticking it to the man). Mrs. DA and the two-year old Baby DA brought the pooch over last night and picked up their girl scout cookies for the ride.

Instead, he called to inform me that Mrs. DA had been mauled by the neighbor's pitbull. They spent most of the day at the hospital, and Mrs. DA will have some permanent damage to her face from this incident.

I can't really go into more details, but I am asking that you please send some great lounge vibes and karma. Please keep the beautiful Mrs. DA in your thoughts and prayers. Also, some good vibes to DA. He has to take care of Baby DA solo for a while while Mrs. DA undergoes surgery and recuperates.

21. HOLY SHITSKI!
That is TERRIBLE. I don't know Mr. DA or Mrs. DA but that is a terrible thing for anyone to have happen. I would be interested in finding out what exactly happened. Some dogs don't need much of a trigger, some are already triggered when they happen upon someone. I can't imagine how terrifying that must be. I feel terrible that pit bulls seem to so often be the cause of these attacks, but I do think a lot of it has to do with owner apathy. They are high maintenance dogs and can't be neglected or ignored like your laid back labrador or beagle. (I love my black lab.. he may lick you to death, but that's it and I'm sad to hear of dog attacks because we feel the backlash when we can't find a rental to stay in or a park to walk with our dog)

Some friends of mine had their dog attack their newborn.. to the point where the baby had to be airlifted to a regional trauma center. It, sadly.. was a pit bull too. They made a stupid decision in how they introduced the dog to the baby, didn't have control of the dog. His petite wife and her petite sister introduced them. It didn't take much for dog to take control of situation. The baby had been usurping dogs place in the home for at least a month before dog was introduced to baby. Dog tried to kill baby. Terrible circumstance. They had the dog put to sleep. Sad all around.

My thoughts and agnostic "prayers" are sent to Mrs. DA at level RED.

22. DA is a diligent protestor
He is at just about every protest and he has sometimes posted pictures of the various marches in which he participates.

I am incredibly sad to hear this.

I'll be thinking of Mrs. DA and meditating on her behalf.

44. I do not know all the details, as Distressed American was,
well, distressed, when I spoke with him. This dog has a history of biting and now the beautiful Mrs. DA has to suffer through the consequences of what could be "owner apathy" or just plain viciousness on the part of this dog.

All of this raises so many questions in my mind as far as the pit bull(as a breed) is concerned. I have one living next door to me. It used to come and lunge at my windows until I called animal control and the owners were mandated to have it leashed at all times. The owner (like the owner of the dog that bit Mrs. DA) swears the dog will lick y ou to death. It has become more docile in the past months, even wanting attention from my little girl, but I can tell you that my child will never go near that dog again. I may sound paranoid, but I have never liked that dog, and with this incident, I have even less confidence now.

49. The problems seems to be
that the breed, like so many others, has been over-bred to death and not a close watch has been kept on how or when it is bred, genetics and all included. Also, many owners may think they are getting a purebred when they are not; or may not even attempt to get a well-bred dog.
It's a shame, because it is human error and greed that has ruined the majority of this particular dog breed.
I know I may get flamed for this, but I don't blame you one bit for your caution.
Side note: husband had his arm TORN COMPLETELY OFF by a doberman when he was seven. Miraculously, there were limb-reattachment specialists at the local hospital. He has full use of his arm today, with very small scars.
My best wishes for Mrs. DA.

50. I know what you mean
I work at a kennel part time. Last week, on a day I felt under the weather, I was running the big dogs out in the yard. Almost all of them seemed to sense I was weaker than normal and were messing with me and knocking me around. We had two pit bulls boarding that day. I let one of them out to exercise. When I went back in the run to put him up, the dog was all over me as soon as I shut the gate. He didn't bite, but he was jumping up at me and made two bloody claw marks on my belly. He kind of knocked the wind out of me and I got out of there immediately. My boss came to put the dog back in his room and the dog clawed up his arms too until they were bloody. This dog was still a large puppy (about a year old) and wasn't biting, but I felt really strongly that if I had been knocked down, it might have been a different ending.

62. you're right. Keep your kid away from it!
That dog has no boundaries, thanks to a very irresponsible owner. The owner may be the dog's Alpha, but your kid is not and that dog could seek dominance by attacking her. I'm so sad that you have to deal with this situation. I'm so sad that the DAs fell victim to another irresponsible pit owner -- i hope they sue that jerk! Dogs are wonderful animals and I adore them. It breaks my heart every time I hear about dog attacks because the dog is as much a victim as the person it mauled, and often, the only way to manage the situation is put the dog to sleep. :-(

61. i really hope Mrs. DA recovers quickly. What an awful ordeal.
Every time I hear these stories, I get so angry, not at the dogs but at their irresponsible owners. Pit Bulls were originally bred for fighting, and they're built for it. Some have dominant personalities, as do many other breeds and mutts, but in powerfully-built dogs like pits and dobies, those which are predisposed to being dominant personalities can be ticking timebombs unless the owners reign them in. These kinds of dogs need strong compassionate owners who recognize those personality traits, and makes extra effort to discipline and train the dog, making it clear that humans in the household, even the kids, are dominant.

DOG OWNERS AND FAMILIES MUST BE THE ALPHAS IN THEIR DOGS' LIVES!!! It's the only way to stop these senseless maulings.

42. The dog is under 10-day quarantine and will most likely
be put down. It makes me very sad to see any animal put down, but I am more concerned for Mrs. DA than the animal.

The dog bit Distressed Americacn a while back, I don't recall exactly when, but he had to punch it to get it off his leg. He told the neighbor the dog better stay far away fro mhis wife and baby. Now this has happened. It is so sad.

54. A student of mine once went to class in shorts (admissible, it was very hot)
and one of his legs looked VERY ugly. I asked, expecting to hear about a bad car crash. Instead I heard about a pitbull.

Hope Ms. DA gets the best surgeons around, and the owner of that beast gets his house handed over to the DAs.

Hey, DA...

I was horrified to hear about what happened and relieved that it wasn't much worse. I hope your wife has a speedy recovery. I also hope your wife hasn't been too badly traumatized by the incident, but I fear is.

I was the victim of a dog attack many years ago... I wasn't hurt badly, but I still live with the fear from the incident.

Take care.
