Is Anyone Else Frustrated by DU's Format?
I find the format very difficult especially when it comes to finding threads I am interested in following. Something posted in the morning in any given forum is gone--usually to page 4 or 5-- by afternoon and it takes a lot of hunting around to find. Forget about trying to find something posted two or more days ago. This also often means we get duplicate threads because people don't realize that a day ago a topic has already been raised.

Can't DU integrate some kind of search mechanism based on key words?

2. Pippin, there is a search function, but you have to be a donor to
use it. However, the required donation is not large.

Maybe Pippin Does Not Know How To Use The Search Feature.

However The Number Of Dupes In LBN indicates that the Search Feature is

Kinda Screwy Sometimes

14. That's the best way.
Bookmark the threads you are interested in and they are right at your fingertips. Also, we have a new function by which you can bring up a list of the last threads you posted on.

6. I think the search feature works
but I don't know, because I never got my star.

I think that was because I was banned for complaining about the rules right after I donated, but I'm not sure.

I'm not in a position to donate any more right now.

I have used the bookmark feature, which is adequate sometimes.

7. Them little grey boxes with a cross in
sure do rather make for a busy looking interface, and stop the reading flow as you work your way down the threads.

9. Like you, I was orginally frustrated with the format.
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 02:43 PM by flaminbats
But eventually I began to click the links organizing the topics (by author) and (by topic) rather than the default setting. I found that the two I use most often are the options organizing the threads by author, or date..which is the default setting.

I only organize them by topics when I wish to find one thread in particular rather than reading the currently active threads, but cannot remember the original poster's username. But now that I understand the format, naturally I love it.

11. I LOVE DU!
I love the format and everything else. There is a search function, you can bookmark threads you want to go back to, there is so much good stuff here. My only complaint is that it is so damn addicting I find it hard to do all the other stuff I should be doing.

12. Be nice if....
Threads were aged (default) by last post to them as opposed to origin time.

While I disliked it at first, I rather like the "must donate" for search concept --- keeps some unsavories from dredging. Also be nice if "supporter" added more capabilites though.

13. I've seen better...
... forum implementations, but then I've seen a lot worse too :)

My only real beef is that after you post, you have to back up or otherwise muck around before reloading the thread. Can't for the life of me figure out what kind of hack causes that :)

15. One thing that can help would be ending the time limit for editing.
I often cut and paste all of my longer postings from the same text document which I leave open while on the internet, this sometimes results in strange typos, statements being pasted out of order, missing words, and overspacing.

I can now able to use this method less with the spell checker available at DU. But it is always nice to correct some stupid error or typo that wasn't noticed before.
