was my fav album of theirs. I only have Powertrippin by Monster Magnet, are the newer CDs just as good?

... but their others are pretty good also. "Dopes to Infinity" stands out in my mind. Their music always reminds me of an acid trip set to rock.

8. Garth Brooks "The Dance"
Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that youd ever say goodbye

(chorus)
And now Im glad I didnt know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But Id of had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasnt I a king
But if Id only known how the king would fall
Hey whos to say you know I might have changed it all

*chorus*
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but Id of had to miss the dance.

123. I like some of it
but not "The Dance". Why do they always play it at weddings too. It's about a guy remembering his prom date he broke up with years ago.

"Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
but I'd have had to miss
the dance."

Uh, no, if you knew she was gonna break your heart, you could have taken somebody else to the dance.

127. I didn't get the impression that it was about any specific event, such as a prom. But
its a horrible wedding song.

"for a moment, all the world was right
how could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye"

And I am glad I didn't know
the way it all would end, the way it all would go..."

Yeah, basically, a beautiful moment that would end in tragedy eventually, and looking back on it now that it is in the past and still remembering fondly.

Not great wedding material. I would think maybe more of a "we will be together forever" kinda theme.

Steely Dan, of course. Also Peter Gabriel solo, Boston, Chicago (up to a point; "You're the Inspiration" puts me over the edge), etc.

The funny thing is, I like pre-Collins Genesis and definitely pre-McDonald Doobie Bros ("China Grove," "Long Train Running," "South City Midnight Lady," etc.), as well. I just don't mind their poppier reincarnations as well.

Honestly, it's pseudo-Christian pop rap-rock, that does a good bit of ripping off Faith No More. That said, it's still pretty catchy, and a few of the heavier songs are on my gym MP3 rotation.

But I'm sure once some hipster band realizes the awesome power of that song and its kickass keyboard solo and covers it, mustachioed men in ill fitting pants and women in vintage glasses and polka-dotted blouses will hail it as the most brilliant cover song in ages.

See, I was like 3 or 4 when it came out but I loved it. I made her buy the record for me and I listened to just that one song every single frickin' day for ages. Still have the record, still haven't listened past the one song. I also made my mom take me to go see them when they played at a park.

Fascinating stuff; I find it hard not to linger a while when I encounter the re-runs on public television. The shiny patina of the fifties and carried beyond, the Stepford style women, the church deacon type men. Good plaers! For its ilk, the music is good. In context, I mean.

which uses a piano loop from a great rock song called "Uphill Peace of Mind"

VAN GLORIOUS!! this is protected by the RED, the BLACK, the GREEN - with the KEY!!

no embarassment - just that I don't know many people who consider it artful music - that's where I beg to differ.

Peace

Had no business on this thread.

Truth be told, not only do I love pure ABBA, I love ABBA derivatives too. My candidate for the cheesiest derivative has to be Richard Clayderman Plays ABBA. The genius of their songs still shine through, proving your point about their crafting abilities.

86. I think some Sheryl Crow songs are catchy
it has tarnished whatever indie cred i once claimed to have.

However, I think folks should enjoy whatever music they like. What is unfortunate is when folks only know mainstream/Clear Channel stuff and never venture beyond that to college and alt radio, etc.

There is a wonderfully large canon of music out there waiting, that very few people seem to know about.

89. Progressive Rock...
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 06:39 PM by sendero
... in general. ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, the whole damn lot of them.

And the "punk" movement that lasted about 1 year until everyone figured out that listening to assholes who can't play their instruments for jack is not really fun or even really rebellious and so the post punk movement was born which was one of the most musically fertile times in history but then guess what? The art-politics pretensions of the post-punkers was no less ridiculous than the hippy dippy shit of the prog rockers.

So bottom line, I like good music that is creative and different and frankly, if I could play it myself, I'm not going to pay for it and it is a rare phenomenom indeed when ANY 20 or 30 something with a guitar and a record deal could tell me anything I didn't already know :)

100. Oh, more than half of what I listen to
Really. I don't care what they think, but they'd be dismayed to find what artists I have next to some other artists.

I love a lot of the ones listed, plus much of the pop/rock of today. Not Hilary Duff, Creed, Nickelback, boy bands like 'N Sync, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Britney, Paris Hilton, or Brooke Hogan. But I love Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, The Corrs, The Veronicas, Barenaked Ladies, My Chemical Romance, Jag Star, The Fratellis, Hope 7, Leslie Mills, newer Mandy Moore and (gasp!) Hanson, Kelly Clarkson, Nina Gordon, Green Day, The Like, Bonnie McKee, Sheryl Crow, Pink, Lillix, The Oohlas, Damone, Brie Larson, Susan Cagle, Marianne Keith (just discovered her!), etc. Also like a good bit of mainstream country: big Garth fan, and like (not love) Shania Twain.
