It seems the company I work for is going though, or putting its employees -- me included -- through hell. First the news was the company was up for sell. Then it started going around that nobody wanted to buy us. Now they are talking about outsourcing. They have been outsoursing for quite sometime, but now they are really going at it. All this tension has everybody at each other's throats. Please think of me when you can. It will be appreciated.

I think many industrialized nations would be mortified at the way this country's workers are treated. Spending most of your waking hours miserable and tense is no way to live.

Job insecurity messes with your entire life in ways that are impossible to anticipate in advance. Until you've been there up close and personal it is really tough to predict how much it will mess with your head.

This is not a matter of "Gee, maye we'll have to cut short the trip to Cannes this year" it is about stuff like "How long can we keep a roof over our heads if this goes south" and "WTF are we gonna do about stuff like insurance and buying food if I'm out of work for very long?" An added stress is the self esteem issue of maybe facing a forced job change and all that comes along with it including job interviews and learning new skills.

4. I'm sorry to hear about your current employment situation. That's no way to live

I went through a similar situation when I worked for a manufacturer in Maryland a few years ago. Even though I was only with them for six years we were bought out three times and, each time it happened, more people lost their jobs. I lost mine after the third buyout. Fortunately, by the time I lost my job, I was already well on the way in my training for a new career in teaching. Perhaps your current situation may be a call to you to consider other, more stable lines of work. In the meantime, I hope you and your coworkers can realize that you are all in a similar position and that you should be as kind and supportive to each other until stability is restored to your lives. Good luck, I hope everything works out for the best.

7. I got down sized in 2004

I saw it coming for months and they cut me on my 50th birthday. I contracted for a year before I found steady work again. In the process, I declared bankruptcy and am going through a divorce. But, who cares? It's only money. I have what's left of my health, I have close friends, the local bartenders still have my favorite beverage for me when I walk in. So, I show at the dollar store and buy clothes at WalMart. Life is good. Hang in there, it's never as dark as it seems.
