1. German, English, French, Scottish and probably some
Native American tossed in there -- the English part of my family was here before George Washington...
and my grandfather, whom I never met, had the most amazing/gorgeous facial bone structure I've ever seen - looked exactly like a white-haired, blue-eyed, native American.

Is it "Scottish" or "Scotch" - I always thought the former was to describe heritage, the latter a drink!
;-)

4. me neither, scots/german/scandinavian...
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying:
Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green,
Can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war.
We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now youd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day
Despite of all your losing.

5. Scots-Irish, German, English...
and, rumor is, a dash of Native American. My ancestors arrived in the 1600 and early 1700's, so the rumor is likely to be true.

I'll celebrate St. Patty's day, but I'll be a pretender.. ;)

10. English and Scottish...apparently some Irish mixed in the Celtic side

My mother's side of the family is well documented on both sides going back a thousand years or so -- English upper-crust, and those people had everything written down -- but my father's side is largely a mystery to me, consisting mostly of a bunch of wild Scots whose life details probably aren't written anywhere. I do, however, recall hearing there's some Irish in there and I do know that I had ancestors on opposing sides at the Battle of Culloden -- I'm glad one didn't kill the other. :D

I always thought some of the characters on my mother's side were pretty cool (movie-like), such as honest-to-goodness armored knights (one allegedly tortured when captured but freed by a Saracen princess who fell in love with him -- the family crest on my maternal grandmother's side features a hand holding a bloody scalp, because he was hanging by his hair and she freed him by scalping him), royal-court and parliamentarian luminaries, artists, diplomats, political prisoners (in Siberia!), suffragettes (my maternal great grandmother was jailed for vandalism -- she threw a brick through a window during a protest, and was force-fed in prison), miners, a victim of gunplay in frontier Texas (the family got the gun that killed him -- I thought it was a legend until, a few years ago, my mother saw the gun), code-breakers, soldiers, artists, writers, a movie star, and so on, but I suspect that my father's side featured some truly outrageous characters...the only ones I have really heard about were his deaf-mute grandfather, who was a champion bicyclist (there're pictures of him with his penny-farthing bike), and a schooner captain who spent his whole life on the ocean.

I find family trees kinda fascinating -- not that I'm a real enthusiast of genealogy (I saw enough of my mother fleshing out all the details of her side of the family to be cured of that) -- but because it's always somehow amazing to me to think of my (or anyone else's) long-dead forebears being real people, once young, who sometimes did some pretty incredible stuff during their lives. It's easy for us to believe that we're the first to come up with something, when the reality is that there's little new under the sun. I think that sort of thing's one reason why Roots resonated so strongly with so many people.

The story goes that my Dad's family lived on the Scottish-English border in the 1200's but were thrown out for stealing sheep and public drunkeness. :toast:

Swedish, English, Irish, Hungarian -- but given the last names in the Hungarian branch of the family, we probably have some Slovak and Austrian background, too. In fact, I believe my Hungarian-born grandmother's Ellis Island entry record lists her ethnicity as Slovak.

On edit: Shaking hands is all right, but kissing or anything more serious -- well, I'll have to get to know you first. ;-)

I guess that I would consider my ethnicity American, even though only part of me is Native American. All my great-great grandparents were born in the United States. My ancestors came from many places.
