Positive Lounge vibes and other good thoughts needed--DIL's father in hospital

My daughter-in-law's father, age 67, was taken by ambulance to the hospital around 2:30 AM last night. He was having severe abdominal cramping, then began projectile vomiting followed by severe diarrhea, both of which contained a lot of blood. He's still experiencing these symptoms even as I type this at almost 9:30 AM. He has diabetes, and the doctors are looking into that as maybe the why of this. They say it is definitely not a virus. Also, this man has never had an alcoholic drink in his life, so it can't be attributed to anything like that.

Your good thoughts, positive vibes please.

I'll be back here in a bit after I return from taking care of my grandchildren while son and DIL return to the hospital. I'll update when I can and/or know more.

7. The Lounge vibes are working--UPDATE (I just got back home for a while)

My DIL's father has been transported by ambulance to another town and hospital, and may have appendicitis. They still aren't sure, but he is still in extreme pain. Apparently he had been having abdominal pains for the last few days, but chose to ignore it. At first they thought the appendix had burst, but it seems to be greatly inflamed, but again, they are still doing tests. At least the vomiting has stopped for now, and he's on all sorts of IVs and some antibiotics.

He was transported to another town and hospital because the two hospitals here are Seventh Day Adventist, and apparently the surgeons are not on call because today is their Sabbath :mad: :wtf: :nuke: :grr:
Now I know to NOT become extremely ill on a Saturday in this small agricultural town :sarcasm:

Meanwhile, my DIL remains with him...none of her siblings can be bothered to help out. Her mom speaks little English, and, of course, her dad is not in a position to speak much at all at the moment.

So keep those positive vibes coming! Hopefully, whatever is wrong will be resolved soon, and that will most likely be by surgery.

15. UPDATE II

DIL's dad is in surgery. They are doing exploratory surgery as they don't know what's going on. This doesn't sound good.

Am headed back over to my son's house to take care of my grandchildren while son and DIL return to hospital.

16. UPDATE Night Version

Thank you all for your positive energy!

DIL's dad had a ruptered appendix that had back flowed into his stomach. He had an appendectomy, his stomach and intestines cleaned out, is in recovery, on some heavy antibiotics, and being kept in the hospital for at least the next 4-5 days to make sure he doesn't get a severe infection after what has happened.

All the family has finally rallied 'round, and am heading back now to my son and DIL's house for pizza.

Seems the dad may have to stay in the hospital for as long as two weeks...it all depends on if there is residual infection...at least that's what I understand from what my son and DIL have told me.

Since DU has a policy re: any med advice..although all you would be doing is offering personal experience information, am PM'ing you.

21. Things took so long because this is a bass ackwards part of CA

Very rural, Seventh Day Adventist hospitals here, no surgeons on call on a (Seventh Day Adventist Sabbath!) Saturday...but am with you...12+ hours to decide if a someone who is projectile vomiting blood, is diabetic, and complaining of extreme abdominal pain, getting a back flow of fluid in the stomach, having to be put on a respirator because breathing was become very difficult should have surgery to diagnose if it's a ruptured appendix, a colon problem or anything else is just a little too long to wait...and since this is where my family and I live, it scares the hell outta me knowing that any one of us could face a delay that could change our lives forever,
