Who's your *LEAST* favorite NCAA men's b-ball coach.
I have a bet going on another message board, and I wanted to get opinions from a bunch of people who probably aren't all diehard Carolina fans!

Lay it on me!

thanks :)

And considering he's an ex-buckeye, that's saying a lot.

2. Osama bin Laden got hold of a magic mirror
He hung it up in his cave, and decided to try it out.

"Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the biggest bastard of them all?"

Mullah Omar saw Osama stumble out of his cave, looking shocked. "Osama, what is the matter?" he asked.

Osama said, "Who is this Bobby Knight guy?"

20. I'll say this for Bob Knight.
Bully? Sure. Loud mouth? Indeed. But, his players graduate. During his career at IU he had something like a 95% or better graduation rate.

He also runs a very clean program. He's never, to my knowledge at least, even been looked at for shady recruiting practices, and if his players get in trouble he does not play them. You can't say that about a lot of coaches in the NCAA.

It's just too bad he can't control his temper.

4. I have a serious hatred for...
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 08:52 PM by Chan790
Coach K. I don't know, he seems like I nice enough guy but I can't stand him. Probably because I view him as the personification of this thing called basketball, which I truly despise, nearly as much as auto racing.

Sports in general, not a Chan790 thing. Baseball and Hockey being the exceptions.

I also hate Jim Calhoun, but less so. He's partially at fault for the Whale leaving Hartford. Don't ask why, I don't have a reason, but I blame him for the Whalers moving to N.C. As least the Triangle has taken good care of our team. I'd be pissed if y'all were as bad of a hockey town as say...Atlanta or Miami or L.A.

I thought the blame rested solely on Karmanos (who sucks, by the way). Is this about UConn building Gampel and thus depriving the Civic Center of its other major draw? Not sure Calhoun was even behind that.

If you're gonna hate on Calhoun, might as well focus on that bad Division III team he dressed up in UConn unies this year. :puke:

27. No...
I simply blame him...and the fact that UConn Men's basketball, even in the consistently bad times, has had preference in broadcast. It's hard to make people care about your major league sports franchise when they get preempted constantly to show an at-that-time second-rate (or third-rate) program like the Huskies getting beat.

Besides that...he's a terrible coach. UConn's basketball rep (which is the basis of it's recruiting success) is more the result of its' 2+ decades of success in Women's basketball. Success in the Women's game brought real talent to UConn on both sides of the gender-divide. Only then did UConn move from the pack of mid-level basketball schools (Sweet-Sixteeners who were never going to the big game.) to a competitor. It's hard to lose with that much talent. Jim Calhoun owes the greater portion of his paycheck to Geno Auriemma.

This year, more than any year in the past 10-15, reflects Calhoun's actual coaching skill.

It's much like my theory that even an alien, a celestial being who had never seen basketball before, some"one" with no knowledge of the game, could coach Duke to a winning record for at least a few years.

6. Rick Pitino
IMO, the piddly 3-point shot ruined the way college basketball is played, and Pitino's teams abused it more than anyone else. I loved it when his teams panicked and shot themselves out of the tournament so often as favorites when he was at Kentucky.

I felt so terrible for him today.

Otherwise, Coach K for his politics and the school he's involved with.

29. I agree he's a dirty, filthy traitor for going to L'ville....
But I can never hate him...Every time I remember those nights in late March '96 when UK went to final game and won the national championship I get very nostalgic. I was a student there at the time and I still remember those nights with everyone running out into the streets as some of the best times I've ever had. Pitino turned that program around from one of shame and scandal to a force to reckoned with in just a few years.

Congrats on getting your bracket right! No way were the Cats going to beat Kansas today, although it would have been great if they had.....

So I can understand you not hating him. Just my Dad's huge U.K loyalty rubbing off on me.

Note: He lives just outside of Louisville.. so every one of his closest friends hates U of K.

And yah I got my bracket right but doesn't keep it from being in too much shambles heh.

All well my first year playing brackets.. next year maybe I'll look better.

...was the worst mistake in his professional career. I've seen L'ville play a handfull of times this year and you can tell his heart just isn't in it. Like he's just phoneing it in. I think he'd head back up 64 East to Lexinton in a second if he had the chance.

40. I didn't have them getting past Villanova...
...and I'm the hardest of the die-hard UK fans. I used to turn down the television audio and listen to Caywood Leford call the game when I lived in Kentucky (Pre-Navy days). I would much rather see guys like Richie Farmer, Darren Feldhaus, Jeff Shephard, Scott Padgett, and John Pelphrey give every ounce of their souls on the court and lose, than watch this crop of bums play half-assed and win. But, that's just me. Can you tell I'm not a card carrying member of the Tubby Smith fan club?

48. Neither am I . .
Although I don't hate the man . . . .

Honestly I was torn wether or not to put UK past Villanova.. but in the end I figured I had to give them at least one win on my bracket. . . and it paid off. .. but after that I couldn't justify putting them any further . . . .

Kind of like with VCU (My college, although I dropped out of it heh) . . I gave them the win against Duke... but I just couldn't put them pass Pitt (Although they gave them a great game . . .)

Kentucky Basketball is still a great family thing with my dad though. If I happen to be in Kentucky for the Louisville/Kentucky Game.. we all head to the grandparents.. have a great big meal and watch the game on the big screen.. with one of my brothers rooting for Louisville just to be the bad guy.

22. I don't mind him so much anymore, now that he's not at UK.
When he coached their though, I could not stand him. I used to scream at the refs because they refused to call technicals on him for being out on the floor during the game. I'm not talking about just barely on the floor either. I'm talking damn near on the three point line.

I'm not saying his program was dirty at UK... but I know a couple of people that went to UK at the time and they said that an awfully suspicious number of his players drove around campus in luxury cars. Just saying.

Two NCAA invites in 6 years? Plus the fact that Dr. Tom is related to me. Is there any talk of Alford getting fired? Sports Illustrated was calling him one of the most over-rated coaches about 3 years ago, and yet they acted like he was a serious candidate for Missouri or Indiana jobs.

38. Tubby Smith. Here's why...
Edited on Mon Mar-19-07 04:28 AM by ALiberalSailor
He's now had 10 years to make this program his own. He won one NCAA title in his first year, but it was with players he did not recruit, nor probably would have recruited. Although the Duke game in 1998 proved he is a capable coach, the simple fact of the matter is that his eye for talent is suspect at best, and he can't recruit the kind of players who we, as true blue Wildcat fans, expect to see wearing the Kentucky Jersey. As one of the many "Pitino Proteges", I think he's cemented his place well behind #1 Billy Donovan, and #2 Ralph Willard.

After watching yesterday's televised abortion that was the 2nd half of UK-Kansas, I am ready to do away with Tubbyball, and all the futility and boredom that comes with it, and find somebody else. Anybody else. Here's a name nobody has trotted out yet: Stan Van Gundy. He used to coach the Heat(NBA connections), and he knows Pat Riley(UK alum blessing!). Now that he has something to prove, I'd love to see the players he brings to the school. As for Smith's recruiting, let his albatross be these 2 words: Sheray Thomas.

45. I cannot STAND Coach K
Forget his politics, which are slightly to the right of Benito Mussolini's. Also forget that he's responsible for putting a long string of Repuke politicians into office with his little in-home fundraisers. Or that he makes more money than anyone at Duke INCLUDING the president of the university. Today we're talking basketball.

Coach K's problem is he doesn't recruit backups. He might have one or two guys who can play sitting on the bench, but in general a Coach K team consists of five men who could go in the first round of the NBA draft, and seven Division II-quality players. The team of men Duke's women's program practices against is generally better than Coach K's second string.

Coach K has another problem with trying to recruit backups: Anyone who KNOWS the NBA will take him, who's using college as pro basketball prep school, will listen to Duke's recruiting pitch. The school has a serious rep, it wins games with alarming frequency, and having Duke on your resume isn't a bad choice--the NBA is full of men who wore the Blue Devil. Guys who are going to college to gain practical experience so they can some day become pro basketballers, know Coach K plays his starters 36 to 40 minutes per game and plays his bench once the score looks like the Harlem Globetrotters ran it up. Why would I, a very good prep star, ride the bench for Duke when I could play for Syracuse or Connecticut? Duke isn't THAT good of a school.

This is why the Duke program, for all its vaunted excellence, only has three national championships. You can beat Duke if you can focus on the fact you've probably got nine guys on your team to Duke's five.
