1. Are you painting plein air, from photos, or from your imagination?

I know a lot of DU'rs are tired of the snow, but being a transplanted New Englander in the lower elevations of California, I miss it! Your painting reminds me of places where I used to take long walks.
The late spring painting is beautiful. I like the colors of the sky and the way you painted the trees. I find it difficult to paint trees, usually getting too much or too little detail.

2. No plein air

too fricking cold. We have a group of old timers that call themselves -- 'The All Weather Gang". They paint every Monday morning no matter what it's doing outside.

I found photo references on google images and then changed them to my own liking. The photos remind me of my area -- rural countryside with rolling hills.

These are a result of a class that I teach on Monday nights. Our theme is the changing seasons.

I struggle terrible with trees. They never look right in my eyes.

3. They look great!

I've never been able to master painting. I'm a pencil-and-pen, pastels, charcoal kinda guy (it's been years since I've drawn anything), so I really admire folks who can paint. Fantatic job. (Understand about trees, in my media it's moving water that presents the issue -- at least for me.)

:hi:

4. I have done many pen and inks....
and I have been semi happy with the results, but they take so long. My style is pointillistic and no matter how I try to change -- I just can't.

Hey, GemDem, maybe we are twins that were separated at birth! :hi:

6. Wow!
What you do puts my work to shame! I "do" art, but you're an artist! If we're twins, you definitely got the lion's share of the art talent.

5. Those are fantastic!
That second painting makes me want to sit under one of trees and daydream. :)

8. Thank you, Nicole
I'm trying to set a mood -- painting in a generic kind of realistic style.

I always see the flaws, though. The second painting is still in process.

9. Thank you
I didn't realize when I painted the spring landscape that it almost looks like the same place as the winter scene.

I live in a beautiful area, quiet meadows with brooks cutting through soft rolling hills and woodlands. These landscapes are very representative of that.

To keep it real they are not great. They are workshop paintings and demonstrations. I am constantly trying to grasp this whole process, and every painting is a stepping stone.

10. Wow those are beautiful
You are truly talented. Do you show your work anywhere or do the art show circuit? My dh does photography and for the past few years has been doing all the major ones; Corn Hill, Fairport Canal Days, Clothesline Festival, Canandaigua Waterfront, Sonnenberg Gardens, Naples Grape Festival (he won best photographer this past year). He's done pretty good, but it's not his full-time gig. http://www.pbase.com/pregan

I do colored pencil, but just for myself. Takes me too long to finish. Where do you teach art?

11. I love those painterly effects in PR's photographs
I can see why he won that award. That effect is wonderful. I also love seeing all the local scenes.

I like colored pencils and Prismacolors are my favorite brand. It's like working in pen and ink -- too long, but beautiful results. I've seen colored pencil drawings that look as nice as an oil painting.

I work at Holy Family School (Catholic School in LeRoy) two days a week, senior citizen classes one day, home schoolers, private after school classes, and a class at the Mental Health Association one day. I also have a night class for adults in Bergen. I'm all over the place, which makes me crazy, but it keeps life from being boring. And I get to make art pretty much all day, every day.

I have had shows at the Genesee County Arts Council, and used to do a couple of local festivals. I am trying to get some slides together so I can apply for some of the bigger shows.

This is a stupid question, but what does dh stand for?

I will be looking for PR's work this summer!!!!!The Naples Grape Festival is one of my favorites.

12. LoL
dh is dear husband usually. Or damn husband...whatever the case may be. ;)

Unfortunately he's cutting back on his shows this year. I don't think he's doing Naples next season. He is planning to do Canandaigua Waterfront and the bigger ones in the city, I think. Those seem to do the best moneywise for him.

I use Prismacolors for my drawings. I don't have a website but this is the type of stuff that I've done...

BNL, that is fabulous! You are very, very talented. Thank you so much for sharing. You could most definitely do dog portrait commissions. That's how I started 18 years ago. I wanted to be a stay at home mother, but couldn't afford to, so I advertised to do dog and house portraits.

My style is a lot like yours. I used to do dog and cat portraits in two mediums - prismacolors and soft pastels. Lately, I have switched to mostly acrylics because they are much faster.

I don't have a website, yet, but a good friend is going to build one for me. I just bought a new camera and I'm frantically trying to get pictures taken of everything so that she can begin.

You are always so complimentary. They're ok -- not great -- but ok. It's a growing process for me.
