should i be worried that i don't get hangovers anymore?
or at least not unbearable or potentially sidelining ones?

it used to be that i wouldn't get hangovers unless i drank a LOT - just a little bit drunk and i'd be fine the next day.

but now i can down copious amounts of booze and wake up early the next morning sunny eyed and ready to go - for example, last night i drank 6 pints of guinness, about a third a liter of whiskey and at least a half dozen PBR's, and i was a little tired today but worked a very physically demanding 8 hour shift today with next to no problems.

even just a year ago, that sort of intake would've kept me in bed the entire day. am i just less of a pussy? or do i have a problem?

1. I don't know
I've heard it said that the body takes about 1 hour to process 1 ounce of alcohol. That might vary a little from person to person, but I doubt it varies enough to make a big difference.

2. Problem
Try going without for 48 hours, and see how you feel.

I've had to cut back to "only on the weekends" and now I feel worse Sat. morning then I have felt all week. Helps me keep from 'over-indulging'. :)

4. my house is a bit of a party house
Edited on Mon Mar-19-07 01:02 AM by mark414
at least once or twice a week (not including the weekends) i'll come home from work (second shift) to find any where from 5 to 15 people at my house with the booze a-flowin...

suffice to say i have been going on binges and benders - last week i had 5 drunken nights in a row, and i can't seem to get a handle on it

that alcohol disease runs deep in my veins and i'm worried that i'll never learn how to say no - i've already been a 'drinker' for years though i am still young (21) so my body can handle it better than if i had an extra 10 years on my belt, but nonetheless...

6. do you have a retreat?
Somewhere you can go to avoid the party? your room or the backyard. Sounds like you are already getting tired of the party scene, and you know it's not good for you.

last resort: look for new room-mates. Sometimes all it takes to break a bad habit is a different environment.

These are your words - You asked if you should be concerned - If you cannot stop drinking by yourself, you should seek professional help.

3. I'd say you just got used to it.
I'm the same way, actually.. I can down nearly a fifth of vodka and the next morning I can function pretty well. Personally, I think you only have a "problem" when mentally you're relying on alcohol. In my experience it's pretty hard to become physically dependent on it. I could be wrong on that, though. Have you gained weight? Did you go to In n' Out before drinking? There's soooo many ways that this kind of thing is different for different people. I'd say just relax, take a moment and think if you're drinking to quell any "weird" emotions", and if not just keep on keeping on.

7. Be cautious of becoming a 'functional alcoholic'
You could be on the verge of staying drunk all of the time. I keep a log book for tax purposes. Now that I haven't had a drink for years, I can tell by looking at the entries when I was drinking. Some of the entries were on week day mornings.

5. It may not last
If I were you I would pull back on the ETOH now, before your body loses patience.
Mine did.
I went from the condition you described to three and four day hangovers seemingly overnight.

8. Are you having blackouts?
When you get really drunk, do you completely foget all details of what has happened? Do you black out sometimes when you are in between drinking sessions?

If you answer yes to both questions, or just the second one, you probably should seek some help out.

9. You're probably never sober and you maintain a level of functioning alcohol in your system
Most of my friends still alive and sober today are people who could do what you do. The rest are living in the weeds, or dead.

Sorry. . . you asked.

10. Most of the alcoholics I've known didn't get hangovers.
Edited on Mon Mar-19-07 09:01 AM by femmedem
The worst (by worst, I mean the one who suffered the most dire consequences) was a cook who could drink 20 beers a night, then get up the next day and work a double shift. He was hardworking, kind, generous and tender. And he died when he was thirty.

There are a myriad of ways alcohol can ruin your life. If you keep drinking this much and this often, one of them will find you.

Edit to add:  Please quit.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get?
I can do a lot of drinking, but as long as I get 8 hours of sleep, I'm good to go.

Cheers!

17. it depends
i work 2nd shift so even when i stay up real late i can still get a decent amount of sleep...although i average about 1 all-nighter per week (though sometimes it's just because i can't sleep, which i've had problems with forever, whether i drink or not) - and coincidentally i just pulled one last night. but i'm feelin good
