March 19 (Bloomberg) -- Andy Warhol's ``Lemon Marilyn'' is up for sale by an anonymous U.S. collector at 60,000 times its original cost.
The 1962 silkscreen of the film star Marilyn Monroe was bought at the artist's first one-man show in New York for $250. Valued today at more than $15 million, it may smash Warhol's existing record of $17.4 million when it's offered in New York on May 16, said Pilar Ordovas, a contemporary art specialist at Christie's International.
The candy-colored picture was based on a bust-length promotional photograph from Monroe's 1953 film ``Niagara.'' The actress was found dead in August 1962 in what the coroner ruled was a probable suicide. Warhol made another 12 similar-sized images of her, in addition to other sizes later.
