Transphobia is bigotry just like saying all southerners are this or that is bigotry. Did you try the alert button? If somebody says some people in the south are jerks just like anywhere, but doesn't say all people in the south are jerks, they aren't bashing the south, but if somebody is bashing all southerners for what some people in the south (and anywhere really) do, use the alert button. Trust me, the alert button is there for a reason and it IS functional.

shit. Movies and television have almost always portrayed us as ignorant, racist, and inbred. Not too many non-southerners seem to think it's a bad thing.

Even in the south, there's little solidarity among states. States like Kentucky, West Virginia and Mississippi get the brunt of offensive inbred, white-trash labels, while states like Georgia, Texas, and Virginia are a little more highly regarded. Why that is, I don't really know. Being from Kentucky, people are often amazed at my articulate vocabulary and lack of accent, however I grew up in Central Kentucky, which is more suburban and midwestern than it is "southern" in feel.

I'll never forget the scene in that movie "Kalifornia" where they zero in on the license plate on Early's car and it reads "Kentucky."

I've been a nurse in the south for years, and in that time I've dealt with many different socio-econmic groups. Hands down, the "trashiest" people I ever met were from Boston, Mass. My point is, every state possesses lower SES folks that don't know how to behave in public. Unfortunately, we just get the claim to all of them here in the south.

Yeah, the South seems to remain a ripe target, and largely a permissible one, even here. To be fair, though, the same is true of other regions, depending on where you're standing. Certainly, when I lived in the South, I met a few people who believed that California was the 'granola state' (tip the country on its side and all fruits and nuts roll to the Pacific side, lightly toasted) just as my Southern Californian wife, before moving to Dixie and loving it, had an impression of the South based entirely on the rednecks killing bikers in Easy Rider. Of course, those people may have had a point about nuts in California... :D

I agree that people ridicule different areas of the country. Some of it is not intended to harm anyone but just a generalization they should stop and think about before they utter it at a place like DU where for the most part, we agree that the culture that spawned chimpy is the problem, not the solution and that it doesn't include ALL southerners. If Californians really were nuts though, I'd probably fit right in.
