How can I block sites like publicbackgroundchecks.com from getting my information?
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 04:00 AM by 951-Riverside
I decided to type in my address and not only did they have information on my age, phone number, etc they also displayed my neighbors information. Its very disturbing knowing that information is out there for anyone to see. I hate to see what else they release to those who are willing to pay $14 for 24 hour access. :scared:

1. You can't prevent access, but they allow you to opt out.

They get the records through public records requests, which are difficult to prevent. They must have a deal with credit card companies or somehow have access to background checks, because it only lists me where I've had my credit or (nonexistent) criminal background checked by credit cards or employers. In fact, it has me living in several cities where I have not lived, merely because an employer was located there.

These sites are dangerous. Stalkers, abusers, and busybodies do not need access to this information. On the other hand, I must admit that I put in many people I knew to see if they were there.

On Edit: Even celebrities and politicians are in there. Ann Coulter's info is wrong. It lists her as 43, where she is clearly 75.

The alleged "privacy policy" -->

Q. HOW DO I REMOVE MY INFORMATION FROM YOUR RECORDS?

A. Your privacy is important to us. We can block your records from being shown on our site from most, but not all, of our searches. To request that your information be blocked, please send a letter including:
1. FIRST & LAST NAME AND MIDDLE INITIAL
2. ANY ALIASES AND/OR AKA'S
3. YOUR COMPLETE CURRENT ADDRESS
4. LIST ANY OTHER ADDRESSES GOING BACK 20 YEARS
5. FULL DATE OF BIRTH

It would also be advisable to print out the records that you wish to have blocked and include them with your letter.

Letters should be addressed to:
Opt-Out/Public Background Checks
305 5th Ave. South Suite 201
LaCrosse, WI 54601

The information you send will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used to suppress your records.

2. I wouldn't worry about it.
I'm a prospect researcher and the only information available is public information. no private stuff like social security numbers, etc.

most of what you are seeing on that site is culled from phone records, tax assessor records and the like.
