1. That could have several kinds of meanings.
But if you're asking if we could drive an manual transmission, for me, sadly no. I'm an automatic guy only.

7. But an automatic leaves your hands free to fiddle with the radio.
Isn't that driving?

11. Me neither.
I still drive a stick. I also enjoy driving. Which is probably why I prefer a manual x-mission.

4. Everyone should learn in case of emergency.
However, knowing that I know how to drive one is enough for me. I hate them.

9. Sure...
I learned on an automatic and then, literally days before I could test for my license, my father went and traded in the automatic.

For a standard transmission.

I had to learn to drive all over again. 30 years later, I'm glad but, at the time...

12. I once made the mistake of advertizing a car and neglected
to state that it was a stick shift. Won't *ever* do that again. :D
I think it's one of those life skills that everyone needs to know.

but if i borrow a friend's car that has an auto transmission i always keep putting my foot to the floor trying to push the clutch in - and then spend a fraction of a second panicking that my clutch somehow disappeared :D

we have one car, and it's an automatic.

but it's reeeeeeaaaall fast- a 2001 new beetle with a 2-liter turbo...the same engine as the audi tt. i can only imagine how wickedly it might perform with a stick.

19. If you mean a manual transmission, yes.
:D I prefer a manual transmission in a car. I learned on an automatic, but when I bought my first car in 1987, all I could afford was a manual transmission. However, I learned to drive one and loved it from that point on. I've had 5-speeds ever since.

24. you bet
I can drive any automotive stick shifts plus I've driven 9, 10, 13 and 15 speed trucks too. They're a bit trickier to shift since they are not synchronized transmissions.

27. I have not driven a car with a manual tranny,
though I could probably do it, given an opportunity. But given that a lot of automatics now have an option of shifting through the gears manually, what's the point of a stick shift? It seems like an awful lot of unnecessary work.

There needs to be a clutch for the transmission to be a manual.

38. Sort of.
I learned to drive a 4-speed years ago, but I'm a bit baffled by a 5-speed. I like my automatic as it is easier to drink a latte and talk on the phone in heavy traffic.

49. I had to fix my '93 last night.
I garaged it over the winter since Mrs. XNASA has been unable to drive and have been using her car (she has heated leather).

It started right up Sunday afternoon, but died when I went to take it for a spin. Ended up changing the coil, distributor cap and rotor ast night....

But she's purrin' like a kitten now.
