Poll question: How old were you when you first married?
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 02:43 PM by Jimbo S
The word is nowadays people are delaying getting married until they establish careers and such.

So out of curiousity, what age did you get hitched?

On edit: people in alternative lifestyles feel free to chime in!

21. Never been married, though I did live with a man for 6 years.

Does that count?

I'm in my 50's now. I'd like to be married if it was a HAPPY marriage.
But I guess I'm set in my ways...

But while it is young for many, I was much more mature than many of the 23 year olds I see.

5. I CAN'T GET MARRIED.
It is not legal.

Mrs. V. and I are married in spirit, in every way possible except legally.

I thought this was the USA. "All men are created equal." We gay folk are just among the most recent to realize what a crock of shit that is, and how much certain groups must fight to get it to apply to them.

6. I was 29. It's a good age to get married.
my mom, on the other hand, got married at 19 and had me the following year. She then quickly followed that up with two more kids, so that by the time she was only 22, she had three kids! :wow: Yikes.

My youngest sister got married at 38 and had her first kid at 39. She's preggers with kid #2 now and is pushing 41.

What a difference a generation makes. :D

9. I was 32
Perfect age to get married--for me, that is. I had done all my partying, had my stupid-drama relationships, had my even MORE-stupid-drama relationships, and was tired of it all.

But there is no ideal age for everyone: When the perfect SO comes along--that's the only criterion.

Been together since we were 18. :)

I actually think we first mentioned marriage when we were 18 too. But then we pretty much knew from the first date that this was forever.

32. 20, but that one was the express version...
We had dated since 14 and thought we loved each other...she just forgot that loving each other excludes other penises from entering her body, so it was over before we had all of our thank you's sent. Fun! Seriously though, it lasted 3 months, and then 8 more months of divorce.

This time will be forever, and I will be 30. I will kill my kids if they try to marry before 25...at LEAST.

35. I was 31. It had nothing to do with delaying or waiting or career.
It had everything to do with not meeting Mr. LIW until I was 30. :)

I almost married (I mean, thisclose) when I was 20, but I'm very glad I didn't marry that particular person.

37. i am only 21 (22 in 9 days!) so,
i think it'll be a few years before anything like that happens...i haven't even had a single long term relationship yet - i have to get over that whole abject fear of commitment thing that i have...so so far i haven't had the gall to drag anyone along with that still in the way. the opportunities have been there, but i just can't quite bring myself to do it yet.

no worries though; i am single and happy.

one of these days though...she'll come along

Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 07:05 PM by mentalsolstice
...and he was 43. Our first date out (we had dated in), was on my 30th birthday. He took me to a Lebanese restaurant, that we still enjoy going to. We shacked up for a number of years, and got formally hitched when I was 36 and he was 49. First time, and hopefully the only time, for both of us!

on edit: It's important to note that many of our brothers and sisters here on DU do not enjoy full marital rights...I dedicate my marriage in honor of them and look forward to the day we can all stand together and say "this is my spouse"!

42. My husband and I were both 22
It seemed like a good idea at the time. We had a close relationship in college and were essentially married all but legally. His parents did not really accept me until we offically married and were trying to break us up until then.
We have both changed quite a bit since then so perhaps it would have been better to wait. On the otherhand, I don't think that we would have broke up, but if we did it would have been the level of pain of a divorce without others viewing it that way.
Overall, I think that it is better if young adults aren't encouraged to form serious relationships that are like marriages.
I have seen many younger marriages lately in my hometown paper in Ohio. I think part of it is that one or both of them are going to Iraq and want to be legally married in case something happens.

close calls only count in horseshoes and hand grenades, but almost getting married is a close call for that, two other times previously, once at age 17, and once at age 23.
