Post here if you wish you understood engines.
:eyes:

You know, one of the reasons I got into motorcycles is I thought, of neccessity, I'd get to know something about the way engines work. After the lawnmower, the bike is the next step up in complexity.

And yet.

I'm still standing next to a motorcycle with a remarkably strong starter crankin', and nothing happening. I kneel down and look, but am only partially convinced which thing is the carb, to say nothing of my utter ignorance of what to do with it were it positively identified.

Meanwhile, the $60 lawnmower I abuse, put crap gas in, and leave out in the snow behind the house all winter long, never fails to start on the first pull. :D

1. Sometimes I find screaming 'Start you fucker!' loudly at the engine helps.

2. Well, if you're getting spark and no vroom, I'd say it ain't gettin' gas.
So, while it may not be the carb, it might a fuel delivery issue of some sort.

Now, we have just exceeded my knowledge of engines. How to fix said problem? No clue.

4. At this point
you know that the starter works and the battery is good. It may be a fuel issue, or an ignition issue. It's easy enough to eliminate the spark issue. There are in line testers, but you can ground the body and crank the engine and see if you get a spark. That will eliminate one more issue. If the bike has been sitting for a long time, the gas in the carburetor bowls will gum those things up like the devil, which normally requires disassembly and cleaning. Luckily, there are plenty of books around on how to do this. If you know which end of a screwdriver to hold and can follow instructions, you can do it.

I own a Guzzi-I can relate.

5. I took a shop class on lawnmower engines in school
Although I despised the very idea, it turned out to be very interesting, even fascinating at times. Too bad I was only 11. I don't remember a damned thing about it. And the only remnant from the French class I took at the same time is "Je ne parle pas francais," or something like that, which I've had occasion to use exactly once.
