...And with the IPod. I was about 1/2 block from my house, when out of my periphery I saw someone loom up from behind me, then he tackled me to the ground before I could even react. I started yelling at him, screaming that he better get f**king off me or I'd f**k him up so bad even his mother wouldn't recognise him. I am a 6'1" 155 pound woman, and this was a rangy kid who was shorter and about 20 pounds lighter than me. I probably could have taken him, but before I got a chance, he was on his feet and running away just as fast as he could. I was only about a block from home, so I didn't wait around, I just hi-tailed to my front door making sure no one followed--cuz by then my alcohol buzz was long gone and I was as alert as I should have been to begin with. I wasn't robbed, I wasn't raped--I got away with a few bruised ribs and that was the worst of it.
The reason I share this cautionary tale is because I acted really stupidly. I've walked alone in many cities many times and I consider myself pretty streetwise. But so close to my home, I let down my guard. I never should have been under the headphones, I never should have allowed my senses to become compromised. If you're walking down city streets alone, you need to always be alert, watch the shadows that the streetlights cast, check out reflections in windows as you pass them, stride with confidence, stick in lighted areas where there are other people, et al. I did none of that Sunday night--but I can guarantee that'll be the last time I get shitfaced and ignore the signs!!!
