How the hell is he supposed to get a job?

Also, anyone have suggestions on how to coax parents around regarding tattoos? I'm of legal age, and I want to start getting tattoos on my torso, but my dad has said he'll kick me out of the house if I get a tattoo while I'm still living with him.

Let 'em do what they want. If they can't get through a metal detector, I'm not the jerk for setting it up. :D

Well, he may not get a job but I'm sure he'll get laid. :eyes:

Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 09:42 PM by sammythecat
how can they not expect negative and judgmental attitudes?

They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but try as we might, we all do just that to some extent. We make judgments all the time like that. We glance around a bar and make snap judgments based on appearance. They may be temporary, but they're judgments nonetheless. We simply can't help ourselves in this regard.

Some judgments will lean toward the negative and some toward the positive.

41. It still doesn't make it right
To me, it's just fear and misunderstanding of someone who choses to do that to themself. There will always be assholes who do it just to "do" it for the sake of getting a rile out of others, but I know many people who have done extreme body modification because they felt it made them feel more like how they see themselves. And I can't and won't judge that.

44. They will be judged.
All the time. Every day they meet someone new.

Just like we all are.

Some of us are a little harder to read than others but we get read.

I think all strangers are judged. And the first thing judged is their appearance. Doesn't mean the judgment is final by any means, but it is the first impression and it is important most of the time.

45. oh mos def we're all judged
But, I think we often times project our own values onto people based on their appearance. And that just isn't cool in my book.

I just didn't think people would be so harsh on this guy. I know lots of people who have very serious facial piercings and tattoos, and while I know this particular instance is a very far extreme I know they're *all* judged--which makes it more infuriating to me because they're my friend and are really amazing people.

Even with my own tattoos, I'm judged, and it pisses the shit out of me. My body work is sacred to me I can't imagine what it's like to be him.

I just mean that it will happen and I'm afraid it won't stop. People who know him will know him for who he is whether he's cool or an ass, but strangers will judge and most often negatively.

I understand your frustration. Really. Not exactly, but I can imagine.

However, as a professional event planner, myself and my staff have to interact with clients and vendors all around the country and in person where people might not see the same potential in him as I or my staff would because of his appearance.

I'm not saying that there aren't jobs for him, I'm just saying that his choice of jobs has become very limited by his choice to do that to himself.

99. Sometimes it does. And not just a little bit, if you're talking about face tattoos.
Edited on Fri Mar-23-07 12:42 AM by quantessd
Those would be jobs where you have to interact with people face-to-face, and you have to maintain an at least somewhat "professional appearance". That's maybe...how many...at least 33% to 50% of all jobs. Maybe more.
Face tattoos, I don't understand. 99.9% of the population doesn't understand why someone would tattoo their face, and probably don't want to, either.
As I stated before, I have several tattoos. I just chose to get them in places that are usually covered with clothing, a decision which has been invaluable to me. I was a speech pathologist until recently (no, the career change had nothing to do with my tattoos). Most people I meet have no idea I have been tattooed, and maybe will never know, which is fine with me.

Anyway, I would still treat the person with a face/neck tattoo the same as anyone else until I got to know them, at least, I would try to. For the guy in the photo, I would have to try really hard!

edited for clarification.

The judgment towards an unknown "other" is still disturbing and I refuse to enable others' insecurity and irrational fears.

61. He is advertising what he is in to
And he apparently has some sort of strong skull fetish thing going on. And skulls require something to die. There is a reason that a skull and crossbones is a warning for death.

His skull fetish is his own business, but that doesn't mean I'm required to feel comfortable in his presence, not when he is very very interested in human death as an object of idoltry.

Having said that, there is no reason that he could not get a job, but he is limiting the types of jobs he can get. McDonald's? No. Factory worker? Yes.

Like it or not, we humans make broad determinations about a person visually. A vast majority of the people we interact with we only have superficial contact with. Waiting in line at the local Subway. Riding a bus. Shopping at a store. And we generally know, based on appearance, some basic facts about the person. Profession, upbringing, likes, dislikes, etc. We all do it. It's part of our survival mechanism.

Since we are unlikely to meet this person in, um, person, we are all giving our reactions as if we walked past the guy on the street or were stuck behind him at Wendy's.

52. It really shouldn't make a difference, but he probably does face discrimination
I think people should be hired based on their qualifications. I would seriously support legislation to protect people with tattoos, piercings, etc. from job discrimination. However, people in America are still being discriminated against based on how they were born, so we still have a long way to go before all job discrimination is wiped out.

95. I don't agree
There's a difference between things totally out of your control (such as birth defects, race, or sexual orientation), things that you have some limited control over (such as weight or addiction), and things you have total control over (such as piercings and clothing).

If I showed up to a meeting with clients dressed like a clown, my boss would have some things to say to me after the meeting.

There's protected speech and then there's being dressed appropriately for the workplace. That includes freaky tattoos.

I would however say that if the dude wants to look like a jackass in his free time and it doesn't affect his job, THAT should be protected.

101. I feel differently about dress codes, because somebody who dresses professionally
on the job can very easily change his or her clothing at the end of the day. Tattoos are a little harder to remove! I can see how his tattoos might not be the best thing for somebody who meets with clients or customers, even though it wouldn't bother me if I were the customer. However, I think it would be unfair to discriminate against him if he applied for a job that he was qualified for based solely on his tattoos. However, I don't put it in the same category as race, sexual orientation, etc. Unfortunately, America still allows discrimination even in those areas.

I've been told that I look conservative, so you definitely can't always judge a book by its cover!:D

If I never saw that part of my Nana (grandma) then I can have a tattoo there. Then my grandkids won't have to see them when I'm old and get grossed out. The Nana Rule would probably also help you hide them from your dad. Keep your shirt on and he won't see them.

get your own place, or if money is an issue- get a place with a/some roomate(s)- then you're free to get inked as much as you like.

25. Dunno, but that's impressive. As for you talking your parents into it,
don't bother. Wait until you move out. They are hoping you will "grow out of it" by then, so humor them.

Might ask if you can do henna until then, though. Just the opinion of someone so deathly afraid of needles he wouldn't get a tatt if he wanted one! :)

68. Well, the guy just limited his life choices
Many places will not hire him, many, many people will not want to associate or get into a relationship with him. Is this fair, no. But it is the reality of the matter. And the sad thing is that even if in ten or twenty years he wakes up to his poor choice and decides to get rid of the tat, he's still going to look freakish due to the scarring that occurrs taking it off.

Sad that he felt that he needed to express himself this way, there are so many other ways to do so without limiting your life.

75. What says he WANTS to be hired by those places or
associate with those people, etc? Seriously, everyone is acting like his life is over because he won't ever get to be the head waiter at Denny's. Just because YOUR life would be unacceptably altered if you did something like that does not mean it will have the same impact on his life.

76. You're right, I have no idea what he wants to do with his life
However he HAS limited his life choices. Like it or not, that's the way our society is. Hell, forty years out and only now has long hair and male ear piercings become acceptable as OK by the majority of people(and there is still a sizable minority that will never accept those things).

Something like this, well, that's a whole new kettle of fish. Most professions, especially dealing with people, won't want him. Like it or not, to the vast majority of people this guy looks freakily scary, and certainly not the person that most would want as their doctor, lawyer, or teaching their children.

Are there areas still open to him? Sure, tatoo artist, mechanic(and if he gets into serious bike modification he can make good money), all of those "edgy" professions. But quite frankly, like it or not, he has effectively excluded himself from most of the mainstream professions.

Look, I sympahtize, I had long hair and pierced ears, back in the day when it was considered scandalous. I realized that I was limiting myself at the time, but I didn't give a damn because I was young, dumb, thought that the world should adapt to me, etc. I know I lost several good jobs because of it also. I accepted that price and didn't regret it. But now I also realize that I would probably be a lot further ahead in the game if I hadn't chosen that route.

Sorry, but this guy simply can't expect that the world will adapt to him. Thus, he is limiting his life choices. Hopefully he's got some sort of plan to compensate for this, if not, he's going to have problems for a long while, perhaps lifelong. He may not like it, I didn't like it, you may not like it, but that is, in fact, the way society works. It's all cool to be subversive and alternative and scandalous, but realize that you're going to pay a price for it. That's simply the way society is:shrug:

80. Believe me, i am more than aware
of the effect body mods can have on people. When I worked in my brother's shop, I (and they) actively worked to discourage people from getting facial tattoos. There were some people who we wouldn't try to talk out of it, but they were people we knew (friends) who already were where they wanted to be in life and they weren't going to be adversely affected by it.

The thing is, this kid may already HAVE a profession, he may already be where he wants to be in life. We only have a picture to go on, no bio. What I see is a kid who spend a shitload of money on a tattoo, which tells me he's getting the money from somewhere, and he's already got head and neck tattoos (bug on right side of his neck, spider-web tattooed in his ear) which leads me to believe that he is not totally unaware of what his choice means. No tattoo artist likes doing faces, they're difficult areas to tattoo, need constant touch-ups, and artists tend charge a shitload of money, both for the difficulty of the piece and as a deterrent. I've seen the deterrent factor one work many times,

Customer "Yo! I want a tattoo on my face of blah blah blah"
Artist "That's your face man, you will never be able to get a normal job with that and people will always treat you like a freak"
Customer "I don't care!"
lots and lots of back and forth, customer is dead set on getting it
Artist "Okay, that'll be $200"
Customer "WHAT?!?!?! Fuck that, it's not worth that much!" walks off and never gets facial tattoo.

There are a lot of people making the assumption that the kid is a stupid, no job havin fool (how'd he pay for it?). I am challenging the assumptions people are making. One of my brothers was established as an artist by the age of 22, that's pretty young, and 15 years later he has no change of heart in what he's doing, he loves it. And one of the funniest things in the world is that, even with all the tattoos, face too, the stereotypical scared-of-tattooed-person person is really not scared of him (little kids and little old ladies adore him). And he's smart as all hell.

skeery!!! :scared: He's never gonna get that job at McD's or as a wedding planner that he's been dreaming of!!! He must be obsessed with death and hate himself because he likes skulls, he's gonna go out and eat our childrens BRAAIIIINS!!! :sarcasm:

Seriously, that kid would fit right in at a Dropkick family gathering. Of course, we're all tattooed FREAKS, one of my brothers has several facial and neck tattoos (not to mention the skull on the back of his skull). He's a fantastic father and husband, and a good person in general. Oh yeah, he and his wife support their family as tattoo artists. I have tons of tattoos (getting there on my sleeves, about 3/5 done). Guess what? I have a good job. I work in cancer research, and the fact that I have tattoos has in no way affected my career. Before this, I worked in retail management (made more money, fucking hated it). Another brother is also a tattoo artist. And we all know LOTS of people who have LOTS of tattoos, facial and otherwise, and they all have jobs, in fact, they had to use the money they earned from those jobs to pay for all those tattoos. Funny, huh?

And I resent the people making snide remarks about his hygiene because he has zits. I am fanatical about hygiene, and, even at 30 years old, I still struggle with acne (I refuse to take the crazy heavy duty make you insane stuff they say is my only recourse, so sue me). Good to know that everyone thinks I am dirty, makes it that much easier to deal with.

**edited to add - I'll tell ya who's gonna have trouble getting a job, it's them long haired hippie freaks and their loud rock-n-roll music, they're never gonna amount to anything!
