Just when you thought civilization had reached its lowest point...
Don't know how long this "American Idol" clip will remain on YouTube, since YouTube has been relentlessly ridding itself of copyrighted video, but here it is...

1. He's the Leif Garrett of the 21st Century
And I was totally ga-ga for Leif (hey I was eight).

The plant was a bad move on Fox's part.

6. Have you seen Leif today?
Maybe it's better to remember him as he was... if you haven't seen his mug shot, here it is...

19. Yup, I have. Pretty sad
I'm thinking he did worry too much about education when he was traveling around the world. He's not the most articulate person I've ever seen.

2. Did he get ousted?
Hey, it takes talent to sing the same sixteen words over and over and over and over again.

4. No, he's still in it! Apparently he has a huge fan base among crying adolescent girls.

Every year they have one oddball who stays in far longer than their talent merits... John Stevens, Kevin Covais and now Sanjaya Malakar.

15. It's not that he has a huge fan base.
Every year there's a group that makes a concerted effort to keep the worst one on the show as long as possible.

Sanjaya is their target this year.

5. What I read in an LA Times article was that...
..the girl and her mother attended a taping of the game show "Are you smarter than a fifth-grader" or whatever it is called, and their tickets also included admittance to the rehearsal of American Idol earlier in the day, which was the show the girl really wanted to get into. The producers of American Idol noticed her crying basically through the whole rehearsal, and talked with her afterwards, then gave her and her mother tickets to the actual live show that same night, and put her in a VIP area almost at the front of the audience. The girl and her mother are from Riverside, CA and the girl is a fan of the show and particularly of Sanjaya. There were rumors going all around that she was a Make-A-Wish foundation patient and all that, but the LA Times article put a stop to that.

8. Yes, it was a plant. A publicity ploy. And they overdid it, by showing her at least 15 times

17. Rumors were flying around that he was going to have a mohawk this week,
but apparently he watched the tape from a couple of years ago, where Nadia Turner did a mohawk and sang "Time after Time" then promptly got voted off the show. So he learned from her mistake. But the "what will he look like tonight?" game has almost become a subplot in the show.

9. Just a guess, but Paula and Simon don't like him much?
I haven't followed the show (okay, I've only seen it twice, and that was last year), but that guy can't sing.

13. Simon gave the best comment of the night...
...at the end of the clip above, he says, "The expression on the little girl's face says it all."

I think the judges are just going along with the whole Sanjaya thing and not complaining. I don't think they consider him a contender to win it. Simon has said that Melinda and LaKisha are in a league above all the rest. Every year, the producers keep one oddball contestant around just to get more ratings - John Stevens, Scott Savol, Kevin Covais are three examples. I think they are just keeping Sanjaya on the show to get more adolescent girls to watch. (Even though Sanjaya seems like an adolescent girl himself, to me.) The odd thing was, in one of the very early episodes back in January, Sanjaya and his sister both auditioned, and I thought the sister was much better, but Simon said on that show that Sanjaya was the better of the two. Now he doesn't like him.

14. There was a little girl in the audience...
that night, of that performance, who cried as if she were seeing the Beatles live. After Sanjaya's performance, Simon said to Sanjaya:

"I know why the girl was crying."

That's all he said. :D

18. That was in the clip in the OP. Simon was grimacing and frowning.
Paula was saying stuff like "You looked like you were having fun, and that's important."

How many times this season has she told someone they "took that song and made it their own?"

20. Howard Stern started a grassroots campaign
to get him to be the next Idol, because he sucks so bad, it would make heads spin if he won. I may actually have to vote now.

21. And his version of that song is worse than the original...how?
I don't watch AI, so I don't know how "awful" he's supposed to be, but I didn't think that was so bad. Definitely not worthy to be called the lowest point in civilization. He's eye candy for the ladies, so what?
If he was a blonde girl with big breasts I bet you wouldn't complain so much...
