Airline Carryon Restrictions
OK. It's been about a year or so since I've flown anywhere. I hate flying. I despise the security checks. I always do what I can to try to get through these as easily as possible.

What is allowed/prohibited in carryon baggage these days? Nail clippers? Tweezers? Razors? Make-up? Toiletries? Small electronics?

Are they still doing the liquids and gels in a clear plastic bag thing? If so, do they have to be unopened in the manufacturers packaging? Or can I pack my own shampoo in a small pastic unlabelled bottle?

Thanks in advance.

3. Thanks
Answers all my questions - except whether I have to buy crap travel size shampoo that I would never otherwise use rather than putting my own stuff in a travel size container. No comment as to whether that is allowed or prohibited - and all the photos show manufacturers packaging.

5. Although it's probably allowed to use your own containers, I'd avoid it.

I can see being detained at the security checkpoint while they called over supervisors to decide whether that plastic bottle holds only 3 ounces, or whether it may be 3.5 or 4 ounces, followed up by a discussion of how to prove that it's really mouthwash in that container and not liquid explosives, and on and on. Do not underestimate the potential for encountering the worst TSA employee in the airport,

I hear you about the crap brands available in trial size containers. I just bite the bullet and check the toiletries in that case.

on edit: keep a change of clothing and essentials on board, and check the rest. That way if your bag is misplaced they'll have a day to find it. I've had "lost" bags too, although mine have always been returned within a day or so.

6. Probably
good advice. Why do I feel violated every time I fly?

My last lost bag was eventually located and returned with everything intact and undamaged. It was delivered to my home two days after I returned from a ten day trip. Our puddle jumper airplane had landed and sat on the runway for about an hour waiting for authorization to taxi to the terminal for us to deplane. We had to make the longest possible trek through that particular airport from one terminal to another to catch our next flight. We only had about ten minutes. The tram ride itself took more than five of those minutes. We did make the flight - as did all the bags except mine. Our departure however was delayed until Dad recovered from the asthma attack that resulted from our unnecessarily rushed connection. On the return trip my mother was singled out for the full security check and carry on inspection. Have no idea why.

7. Check a local motel...one of the better ones
and ask if you can buy some of the items they put out for guests...shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash. I think they even have the really small tubes of toothpaste.

2. If it is practical
Mail as much stuff ahead to you destination. My wife does this when she visits her Mom. She doesn't like to fuck with the check in stuff either. Dress comfortably with slip on shoes if ya got em. Be patient.

4. Wish I could do that
Actually, I wish I could just throw my stuff in the car trunk and drive. I drve everywhere I can when I travel these days. But I am travelling with some older folks and one in particular does not do well on long road trips. He gets stiff.

I'd just check everything on this trip except a very small purse - except I'm afraid the airlines would lose it all. Been there done that. Last time I flew last year as a matter of fact.

8. don't carry on anything other than your wallet and a good book
pack everything else. That will save you the headaches.

10. I'm afraid to

9. 3-1-1 Rule for liquids and gels.
From TSA's website:

"3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure."

Personally I just started checking all my bags when they started this stupid shit. It takes a little longer when you arrive, but it's worth it to have fewer hassles.

12. Apparently American Airlines
isn't familiar with the TSA 3-1-1 formula. They say 3.4 oz containers are acceptable.

None of the websites address whether toiletries must be in the manufacturers packaging. Wonder which lobbyist paid for that oversight?

I'm afraid to check everything since I have already experienced the pleasure of a lost bag. Ten days with a single change of clothing. Not fun.
